Even a real one exists now. Daigo Saito posted about his new project car.

Oh yeah it also will be RWD only with a 1000 HP 2JZ. The drift life I suppose

I'm honestly getting so sick of him putting 2JZ's in everything lmao. But that's one hell of a build though. Happy for him. :)

Here is the Japanese brochure for the car
https://toyota.jp/pages/contents/request/webcatalog/gryaris/gryaris_main_202009_spread.pdf

And for the optional extras
https://toyota.jp/pages/contents/request/webcatalog/gryaris/gryaris_acc_202009_spread.pdf

I sadly can't speak Japanese (yet) but that's a very well done brochure if I ever saw one.
That engine performance diagram makes me really excited to finally get a test drive in one. I mean it wasn't that surprising but it's good to see that the new one makes as much or more torque in basically every situation as my Yaris GRMN does at it's peak of 4800 RPM.

Also a few examples of the luggage capacity. If your are a family man or have to use the backseats all the time you might have a problem but for someone like me that looks like more than enough.

I might be jumping to conclusions but.....

Brochure Google Translate said:
The piston and crankshaft are also thoroughly reduced in weight by high-precision processing, pursuing high response.
Holy shit did they put a billet crankshaft and pistons in that motor?!?! @A70TTR ?

Was snooping trying to find out if the internals are forged.

If that 3-cylinder turbo engine has a closed deck design, forged crankshaft, relatively strong rods and hypereutectic (ie: cast but semi-forged) pistons from the factory I'll be happy.

I think forged pistons might be a bit difficult to manage in a modern Toyota production engine that isn't on the level of, say, the GR Super Sport just due to how the expansion and contraction properties tend to make for more noise during cold starts, tend to promote shorter overall cylinder wall life and don't control oil blowby as well (when cold) as do normal cast and hypereutectic pistons.

The stock pistons used in the 1JZ-GTE, 2JZ-GTE, early 2JZ-GE's and 3S-GTE's were all hypereutectic semi-forgings and are quite strong out of the box. It would not surprise me if, with some technological improvements since the 90's, Toyota has used the same basic process for the pistons in this 1.6L turbo engine.

But I'd also like to hear any comments A70 have on all of these aspects of this engine.

A new promotion video is available. No facts or anything. Just entertainment :)

Also I don't know all the facts about the engine itself but from pictures you can see that the engine is an open deck design.

Open deck after all... dang. Okay, well... here's hoping it can be tuned a bit beyond its stock output, high as it already is for a 1.6L 3-cyl. And that catalyst is right up against the turbocharger which is very common these days but certainly is tight.

Everything seems to be maximized for efficiency with this engine despite it being a performance powerplant.

Open deck is not the end of the world, as can be witnessed in quite a few modern engines.

So in the morning I went to see one live. Still a pre-production car without the circuit pack and in pearl white. And what shall I say? A beast indeed.

I'm 1,85m and I had plenty of room. The seat still had a way to go so I think taller folk can get comfortable too. Seating position is good. It's not as low as a Civic Type R if I remember that right but it is lower than the Yaris GRMN for example. Two other guys who were roughly as tall as me tried to sit behind each other and it worked. Don't know how comfortable it was though.

Obviously I took a few pictures of it and was given a brochure too. It's nothing that hasn't been seen before though.

That's also my part of my verdict. Everyone who is interested really has to see one in the flesh. All the videos and pictures can't do it justice. It has a presence that just needs to be experienced.

And in terms of driving well one of the bosses told me demonstration cars should arrive at the end of October/early November.

Ah something I forgot to mention. It was a bit obvious before but I really noticed it when I took a seat and looked around. Visibility was sacrificed in the name of sportiness and looks. The car does have some relatively big blind spots. You won't really see much if anything on your back right for example. The rear window is also tiny. If you take a look at your rear-view mirror you will only see out with the half of it. The rest will just show you the sloping roof.
I don't mind it personally. As a matter of fact I actually really like it this way but I thought it was good to mention anyway. I know that there are people who dislike the visibility aspect of the current Camaro for example.

Also I just might as well post the pictures I took. Im not a good photographer and I was busy with seeing things with my own eyes so they aren't the best. Also what I said is still true. Pictures just can't quite capture the presence or aura that is has in the flesh.

Toyota GR Yaris sales run hot
September 24, 2020

Cut-price 200kW GR Yaris hot hatch finds more than 500 buyers in just over 24 hours

Australian buyers have voted with their wallets for the all-new Toyota GR Yaris, with the pint-sized performance hatch attracting 560 sales in just over 24 hours after the order books opened.

The second red-hot vehicle from the Japanese brand’s GR garage after the Toyota Supra sports car, the new Toyota GR Yaris is priced at $39,950 drive-away for the first 1000 units, representing a $10,000 price cut.

Orders opened at 12:30pm yesterday, September 23, and at the time of writing, just over 24 hours later, 560 owners had plonked down a $1000 deposit to reserve their vehicle.

In just 30 minutes Toyota had sold 250 vehicles online.

That means there are still examples with the sub-$40K special offer on the GR Yaris available.

Here is a video of a Japanese fellow who already got his GR Yaris delivered and he immediately got a lot of GR parts installed. The video does have some English subtitles.

Guess it won't be much longer until the first owner reviews will come in.

Also good and bad news coming in from Australia building on the last post in here.

The first 1000 cars that were part of the promotion are sold. Only a week after it started. Folks in Australia will now have to wait for Toyota to say if the promotion is really over or if they will extend their special offer.

I am thinking of buying one of these to rekindle my wrc wrx days from 2000.
1280kg; 1.3l; 4̵ ̵c̵y̵l̵i̵n̵d̵e̵r̵ ̵; 3 cylinder; 200kw; awd; manual stick. That is a recipe for some fun I must say with 4 seats and 0-62 5.2s

Thinking may do it in a year or two when the hype has died like the Supra purchase lol hehehe.

For all the curious. The UK configurator for the GR Yaris is now live. Since a few people complained about it they seem to have added now a third model. The convenience pack which includes stuff like the HUD, parking sensors, Blind spot monitoring, etc. Adaptive cruise control and lane assist are standard on every model though.

I wonder which model Aussies get?

There was another 100 available yesterday at now $44 950 so looks like prices are going up.

If you missed out on that initial $39,950 drive-away offer, a lucky few can now snap up the performance hatch for thousands less than the full list price.

After the first heavily discounted 1000 units of its 2021 GR Yaris sold out in a matter of days, Toyota has responded by slashing the price of another 100 examples of its new hot hatch for a few lucky buyers.

The GR Yaris is officially priced from $49,500 plus on-road costs, but Toyota is offering another 100 units for pre-sale at $44,950 drive-away – a discount of $4550 even before you factor in on-road costs.

This latest announcement comes after allocations and pre-orders for the initial shipment closed less than a week after pricing was announced due to an overwhelming customer response.

The first 1000 examples were offered to buyers at the drive-away price of $39,950 – representing a discount of $9550 on the recommended retail price.

"We deliberately set out to make GR Yaris attainable for sports-car fans - and I'd have to say that even we were a little surprised at how quickly the first Toyota sports car in more than 20 years ignited the market," Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley said.

"At the new price, GR Yaris continues to have a significant price advantage over equivalent performance cars costing more than $50,000," he said.

"It also remains keenly competitive against conventional hot hatches, while having a decided performance advantage."

The GR Yaris is powered by a 1.6-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 200kW and 370Nm, paired to a six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive.

Interested customers should contact their preferred Toyota dealer for information, as stock availability will vary.

Local deliveries of the 2021 Toyota GR Yaris are expected to commence in November 2020.
