Sounds like you've had some bad luck. Reliability is important to me, which is why I find BMWs reliability, and resale, off-putting, even with better warranty service from Toyota. The 86 has had 8 years for issues to surface and be corrected. Let's see how these 1st & second year BMWs hold up after that long. Your insulting an entire group of owners, including myself, is very ignorant. Your not doing the Supra community any favors with that, and this thread is not about your disdain for "the FRS/BRZ community".
It wasn't bad luck and unfortunately not uncommon for those cars. The FRS/BRZ community sucks and I am sorry that you're in denial.

BMW has suffered with poor QC for some time now. This car isn't two years out, and quick look at the "problems" board here tells me I was right to stay away from the car. Yes, the B58 is solid (except for oil leaks), but that doesn't do any good when you have constant electrical/chassis issues creating other headaches. I'm very happy with my 86, I will recoupe better resale value than any BMW if I sell it, and would look to the new Z in 2-3 years, since it has a real drivers transmission instead of a slushbox. The Supra is a disappointment to many, myself included, and it looks like it will follow the BMW down the reliability/resale black hole. On the other hand, maybe MKV QC will improve as the platform ages. I'm just not betting on that with my money. ;)

I owned an FRS for the past 8 years. It's a fun car, but it's disposable and the Subaru engine is a ticking time bomb. I bought both cars new and the first one was lemon-law'd after a timing chain malfunction. The second one had engine out warranty repair at around 20K miles due to VVT solenoid failure and oil leaks. My last FRS had just about every TRD Japan/USA suspension/chassis modification and it still didn't handle as well as the Supra does stock. The FRS/BRZ community is probably the worst part of owning one.
Wow, seems like you had a rough time with the 86/FRS/BRZ platform and community. Doesn't mean that holds true for everyone's experience. The funny comparable thing about the 86 and MKV is that Toyota didn't solely develop the engines or platforms for either car. Even more funny is that there's arguably more Toyota influence in the 86 than there is in the MKV, but whatever. Just a fun fact.

Guys quit the p-ssing match over the 2 cars. Now you are insulting BMW owners while you are at it. I've had 3 version of the BMW with this engine. Never had a problem with them, especially oil leaks. I've had my supra over a year, and have not had any problems with it. Not everyone likes manual transmissions. There are many sports cars going the automatic route with out a manual. Corvette no longer has a manual. Porsche has a very good one. The supra has a very good automatic on it. Looks like they may put a manual on it in the future.

It's fine if you like stick, don't insult people who don't like stick, on some cars the auto is now faster than the manual.

If you talking about resale value based on initial price of the car, yes the 86 wins that, but it is significantly cheaper that the BMW or Supra. But I will get more money selling either the BMW or Supra compared to an 86 of the same age. The interior of both are way more comfortable than that of the 86.

You may want to read several posts before the one you have quoted. That's where the "attacking" started...and you put a transmission "in" a car, not "on" it. In the words of Randy Pobst, while hot lapping a nice auto trans car: "A monkey could drive this thing." :D
