I remember I did not drill anything on the decorative pieces unless it was on the bottom. I'll see if I can take a picture next time I am in the garage of that area.
Mine has no gap.. I installed it myself. This lip took a while to get it to align correctly though.. and used spacers in some of the areas in the back to ensure the gap closes on the front.
I suppose one can use some black tape from the bottom to cover up the visible see-through gap.
