Project from a few days ago. It is full winter in Minnesota, so these DIY projects keep me involved with the car and minimize the crippling seasonal depression that comes with driving a greasy Subaru wagon for several months every year.

I will preface this by saying these vents will never be functional because of their placement behind the engine heat shield. Even cutting out an opening in the hood beneath them (which I contemplated) would result in doing literally nothing. This was done strictly in response to an O’Rielly Autoparts employee hurting my feelings with “BMW” and “fake vents” in the same sentence.

Very easy to do, never underestimate the power of spray paint with good prep-work. I figured if it ended up looking like trash I would just order aftermarket “functional” vents. Anyways, I’m happy with the result.

As is custom, I sourced my steel mesh from Target by means of a $13 desktop organizer. Seems to be the best cost vs. quantity vs. quality of material for custom Pep-Boys Tuning mods such as this. I’ve used stainless deep fryer screens as well, but in this case wanted the screen to be black. I’ve been building motorcycles and choppers for years, so I constantly strive to keep things equally clean/ redneck as hell.

Constructive criticism/ opinions welcome.

This is the type of shit I did to my 1991 Eclipse in high school and later my 05 Scion tC. Problem was, mine never came out so nice. Like, no where near this level of execution. At all. Ever.

Looks good man! Great job!

Obviously, they aren't as nice as the SupraMod ones, but for the $177 price difference, definitely worth it!! Great work man!

PS: I'll trade you my NIB SupraMod ones for your watch

I have to agree with others, I was expecting some crap, but I was totally impressed with the final product.

Thanks, I’ve done my fair share of DIY cringe-mods on previous cars, just try to learn from my tasteless mistakes. But I don’t plan to stop with these little DIY Supra projects until it inevitably goes *too* far. It’s all in the prep work! Also, a bead blaster helps if you’re using rattle can 😅

Thanks, I’m doing these projects mainly for the satisfaction I get out of it…but the *tens* of dollars I’ve saved so far on aftermarket parts is also a nice little treat!

and sure I’ll make that trade, depending on your cash on top 😅

I can’t tell ya how many times I wish I had one while I was busy sanding away my finger tips. Must be lovely.

It was dirt cheap at harbor freight, worth its weight in gold as far as I’m concerned

Another little “hack” I use is to place painted parts in the car immediately after spraying. I don’t have a paint booth and this is the best way I’ve found to eliminate garage dust and debris from falling into the paint while it’s still tacky-ruining an estimated 99% of rattle can jobs.

*edit* Fuck that new car smell

Great job on these! They look amazing!

For those who don’t want to go this DIY route we also offer a solution.
