It's an DME swap... They figured out how to code an unlocked DME to work in a car that originally had a locked DME. That seems to be how they tuned the locked DME car.
Hmm. And there are only going to be so many 2020 model year unlocked ECUs available used that people will sell. That's probably going to be an eventual concern for tuning if the later locked ECUs remain uncrackable.

Well on the bright side hopefully someone now has a locked DME that they can go full ham on the crack process without worry of Bricking a customer's car.

This is true. And it is better to try and experiment than not to. Without that added concern it will be easier to do this.

While likely expensive beyond reason. This also means it's possible to reverse engineer and manufacture the older DME's internals to work on our newer vehicles. Worst case scenario. We can have core DME swaps with modified/retrofit units.

Considering what the price will probably be, it might make sense to go standalone. Once youā€™ve bought a DME, paid for a license, bought a tuner, paid for a pro tune, etc.

This is very exciting news! I'm sure the MKV forums will blow up if this is true.

If I'm understanding this they took an unassigned ecu from a 2020 and put it onto a 2021? Would that not cause issues with the changes in the engine between 2020 and 2021? It seems like a bad idea to me... I of course don't know anything about tuning and could be worrying about something that isn't am issue.

Couldnā€™t they use one from an unlocked early 2021?

I think the issue is an ECU from an earlier 2021 already has a vin assigned. I remember seeing something about it elsewhere but can't verify that.

Edit: Pretty sure my entire statement was false. I just went back and tried to find the thread but everyone in that thread was pretty sure they could reprogram the ECU. Sorry for any confusion.

How rare will an unassigned vin dme be though? Can't be more than a handfull of 'em sitting in a warehouse/parts room somewhere right?
