Just picked me up a new iPhone 16 Pro Max this past Tuesday after being stuck on Android for the last 15+ years so maybe someone can give me some insight as to how well Apple CarPlay works with our cars.

Currently it seems like if I have any sort of Navigation going (I primarily use Google Maps however have had similar issues with Apple Maps) and Spotify running at the same time, CarPlay will consistently lag or freeze my head unit. When this happens, you can see the arrow from the Navigation stop in place and the audio from my Spotify will cut out for 1 to 5 seconds then the navigation will jump to my current position and the music will skip ahead to where it's supposed to be at in the song. This happens often enough that it drives me up a f-ing wall with anything more than a 10 min drive. I've noticed it may not freeze as much if I don't have both the Nav and Spotify on the same screen and am only focusing one app in full screen but I'm not sure that matters or if I'm just gaslighting myself. Something to note that I will try later is that in my Android days i did code the AAIDrive (fake Android Auto) to work on the Supra so maybe going backwards and removing the coding may solve my issues, I will update with my findings.

I've updated my phone to the newest IOS update, restarted it, unconnected and reconnected my phone to the supra, turned off background app usage, and spent probably 2 hours a day this past week looking through random Reddit and Apple Forum posts but have had no success finding a solution to this. Am I missing something? Feel like there is no way this is normal considering no one has talked about this in the forum.

And because I know SOMEONE is going to say it yes; I have considered just going back to Android it's not gonna happen.... yet.

While it's not flawless, I find Apple CarPlay to work remarkably well in the Supra. You might want to try removing the iPhone and adding it again and perhaps resetting iDrive - I think this is done via a long press of the volume/power button.

I'd sometimes have issues with the CarPlay crashing and not reconnecting. To fix that I'd have to delete & reconnect it using Bluetooth. Might be worth giving a try but hard to say if it will fix your problem.

I sure hope BMW didn't forget to pay their bills to Apple.. I remember my carplay went dark for months early on. Never know with bunch of retards working in the service industry these days..

Do you leave your phone on the charging pad? I have an iPhone 14 Pro and I found that if I left it on the charging pad it would get incredibly hot and eventually overheat, the symptoms you describe are almost exactly how it'd behave before overheating.

I started flipping my phone upside down (Screen down) on the charging pad so it doesn't charge, and instead just use the USB port/cable when I need to charge it and have not had any issues since.

Do you have another Bluetooth device paired to your iPhone at the same time, by chance?

I used to wear an old Apple Watch and I would experience the exact symtoms you are describing. Even when not using CarPlay, and just streaming music via Bluetooth in my other car. I thought it was a problem with my phone, and started chasing down every Bluetooth and network setting there to no avail.

One day, I jumped in the Supra and went on a 30+ minute drive and didn’t have a single issue. I realized that I had forgotten to put my watch on that day. That’s when I realized that the old watch was actually causing the interference over Bluetooth.

It was very strange, but is certainly a possibility. I haven’t had any issues after replacing the watch.

IMHO it’s well worth a few hundred bucks to pay a remote company to update your head unit unless your car is brand new. Updating mine (2020) changed everything for the better.

this would've resolved any common issue. i experienced something similar when i went from 14P to 16P

this is the outlier. i'd tackle this next
