I wonder if that was to happen, if they would replace the engine with a new crate engine or a reman from one that had problems? Kind of like recycling to cut costs. Again, this is all in theory that there is an oil consumption problem.
If they are gonna replace the engine it will be a brand new engine but they might just do the rings. We will find out soon they will test your engine and if there is cylinder wall scaring they will and have to replace your engine. They probably won’t do a buyback for everyone but some people might get lucky.

it could go either way, but most likely a new with the corrected motor going to the reman market.

I personally wouldnt mind either way as long as it gets fixed, and Id rather a BMW engine builder who is informed of the current issue be the one addressing an engine problem over a random dealer tech who likely hasnt done piston ring gap clearance since his trade school days.

another possibility is they just send around a factory engine builder on a regional basis to repair affected engines if numbers are low, which would likely also be fine.

theres a few ways it could get remedied, but from a cost perspective my guess is it will just be new motors. The labor cost of replacing piston rings might exceed factory cost of a new motor, and for toy/bmw it will be a purely economic decision.
Yeah sounds right but depends on how many motors are effected if it’s all of the 2021 motors they gonna just replace the rings. The dealer techs will have to go to Supra Ring replacement school! ?

i think this is spot on.

If the problem is determined to be just the rings, they COULD just do a ring replacement. And the cylinder wall scoring (if present) will tell them if its a cyl wall issue or a ring issue.

if you end up with new rings vs a new motor, i wouldnt sweat it. Theyd have a regional specialist come and do It (most likely) and hand-gapped piston rings by someone who knows what they are doing will show great compression numbers for years to come.

the more this looks like piston rings than rod bearings, the better for everyone this is.

They don’t have enough certified techs as it is!!

My dealer has zero right now. The one guy they sent to school is using the Covid as an excuse not to come back to work.

It’s always been the rings?

Have not heard one report on bearings. What is your bearing source?

probably. I wonder how many of them own supras and are eligible?

“Joe, says here youve built 37 racing B58 S52, S54, and S55 engines. Unfortunately, because you don’t own a supra, we cant let you go to the course.“

Here is the deal do they still let you drive around till you get your rings replaced and will they upgrade your engine warranty to 5 years 100k miles or maybe even 10 years 150k miles? Hehe! Toyota does not have loaners at least some dealers don’t but I think they can offer you one....or you just get a rental and they reimburse you....all kinds of ways this can go down good or bad...but a ring replacement will work if done right....

I have mr BMW’s private number at his chateau in Bavaria mountains. Do you want me to give him a call from us?
B58 is used in many models, could call their service center and ask questions. This issue has been on going since at least 2018 in the b58.

But there's been many b58s since then. Not a new issue for the B58....
i know. Im just trolling rocksandblues.

that aside, youre 100% correct. Im trying to go back and remember specific cases if it was break in related or if there have been bad batches of piston rings in the past.

I can take as good as I smart off. :)

True break ins are probably all over the place. Even on 2020 and they do not have any issue. Think it’s less break In and more some change in the manufacturing- assembly line

Think I will just drop an s58 in. ;)

Hard to tell if I have the issue or not as I got the low oil notification after 5k miles on factory oil.

If my engine is deemed a dud and needs a replacement I’m just gonna go the lemon law route, why the fuck would I want a heart transplant in a performance car with <10k miles on it...
