Is anyone getting the Toyota dashcam they have or after market? If so which brands/models are the best out there?

I'm looking to get a dash cam (both front and back) for my MKV. Not too worried about cost. I want something that has sensors to turn on to record in case someone gets close to the car as well as something with decent quality video. I've looked at the various options and it seems like the BlackVue DR900S-2CH is a decent two-piece camera. My only concern is that a lot of the reviews say that it gets really hot, so I'm worried how it would fare in the summer. Also, reviews have said that that the Thinkware Q800PRO has better quality at night due to its Sony STARVIS image sensor, but that it's notifications and what not are really annoying. I've heard that Thinkware may be coming out with a new, better two-way dash cam, but am not sure of the timing and don't really want to wait if it's going to be more than a month or two. Another thing I'm not sure of is how well the back dash cam would work given the slant of the MKV's rear window.

Lastly, on a related topic, in the event I do get the BlackVue, I'd prefer not to have to attach it to the windshield. I'd rather use a mount like this. Anyone have any idea which mount (if any) would be compatible with the Supra's rear view mirror?

Any recommendations/information that you all can provide would be greatly appreciated!

I just bought 2 pair of the BlackVue DR900S-2CH for a 4 Channel Setup, including 2 battery packs and a wifi hotspot. Bought them yesterday and will receive them tomorrow.
I also want one of this mounts for the front because its stealthier than the included ones.

More details on your 4 channel setup? Where are you mounting the side cameras? Also what battery packs did you go with and how much did everything run you?

I have a Thinkware F770 in my Infiniti. 2-channel system with a battery pack. I first had a Thinkware F750 and after about 2 years it stopped working. Than I got a F770 and been using it for a little over 1 year now.

My brother has a Blackvue DR750 2CH in his Acura MDX for about 2 going on 3 years now no problem. He also has a Thinkware F750 2CH in his Camry. Both of his vehicles do not have a external battery.

Both brand cameras have been fine.

Thanks, yalpeR - that video is actually one of the reviews that I'd watched and why I'm not completely sold on the BlackVue (due to the quality reportedly being lower at night). I also would be interested in hearing about your 4-channel setup, where you've mounted stuff, and how it looks. Do you have the primary "big" cameras (the ones that usually go on the front windshield) pointing out the front and back and then the "smaller" cameras (that would normally point out the back windshield) looking out the sides of the car? I'm trying to have a nice dash cam but without it being too much in the way.

And good to hear that the Thinkware has also been okay, qmantran. Have you found the alerts/notifications (it sounds like it's kind of an all or nothing thing with the Thinkware) to be a problem?

I have the safety feature alerts disabled. The ones that notifies of you lane departure or red light cameras etc is all disabled.

The only notifications I receive is when powering on the vehicle it tells you "During parking mode x motion detection events detected" It also tells you of any impacts detected during boot up. All of that is within the first 10 seconds of powering up the vehicle. After that it's quiet.

I have the dr900s sitting on my table waiting for the car to arrive.

I researched quite a bit before buying it.

After playing around with it (Not in a car) only thing I don’t like right now is there app. Guessing after getting used to it, I will be fine, but right now it seemed a little confusing.

As for the mount. I think blendmount makes an aluminum mount like the OP posted. I bought a blendmount mount for radar detector as I am fine with having the dashcam mounted to the windshield.

I'm using an older Blackvue, and it works perfectly well, and may be a bit cheaper than the 900.

I snagged a Black Vue DR490-2CH for $69.99 on slickdeals about a week before the car was supposed to arrive on the 22nd. It's been collecting dust in my garage since then.

Make sure you get one with a battery pack, so that it doesn't draw power from the car when it's shut off. People have had a lot of problems on BMWs with cameras that pull from the car battery continuously -- the ECU senses the parasitic draw when the engine is off. Several of the camera companies offer battery packs that draw charging power when the engine is running, but then disconnect when the engine is off. That seems to keep the ECU happy.

Oh wow - thanks for that, Goose. I'm surprised at how clear it is even at night.

The bundle I was looking at picking up appears to come with the hardwiring/battery kit: https://www.amazon.com/Pittasoft-Blackvue-DR900S-2CH-Hardwire-2-Channel/dp/B07BWSG2NP

Just wondering, but what happens when the external battery runs out? Does the camera (including the motion/impact detection) just turn off? Although I'd like it to stay on when I take the car out and leave it in a parking lot while I go shopping, am at work, etc., I just want to make sure that this thing won't drain the car's battery if it's left sitting at home for several days and then the car battery be dead when I return to the car.

Sorry for the back-to-back posts - I mean to ask this in my previous post above but forgot: BlendMount has like 50 different mounts. Do you all know which one is the right one for the Supra's rear-view mirror (will any of them work)?

You set the power magic pro for a time and minimum volt before shutting off.

For example, if you set it to 12v and 6hrs, it will turn off after recording 6 hours or when the cars voltage drops to 12v.

That is the same one I ordered. Along with this memory card: Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB Micro SDXC Card with Adapter - 100MB/s U1 (MB-MJ128GA/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B984HJ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_J9osDbWRPJEGT

Well, for the radar detector mount I ordered, I ordered it for the 2020 BMW Z4....I am thinking it will work. I saved all the packaging in case I need to return it.
