Could preview the next-generation GT-R

Following numerous leaks and teasers, Nissan has unveiled their Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo.

Described as a "vision of what a high performance Nissan could look like in the future," the concept is a 2+2 supercar that is heavily influenced by the GT-R.

Starting up front, the model has been equipped with a "V-motion" front fascia which is flanked by slender LED headlights. The car also has a ventilated hood, a carbon fiber front splitter and circular taillights. Other notable highlights include an aggressive rear diffuser and a carbon fiber rear wing.

The concept was developed by a team of young designers at Nissan Design Europe and they received input from an advanced engineering team at the Nissan Technical Center in Atsugi, Japan.

Nissan declined to confirm rumors that the concept previews the next-generation GT-R but they said the model "hints as to how a supercar of the future might look."

The Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo will be available in Gran Turismo 6 in July and the company said the "real-world is ready for the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo. Watch this spaceā€¦"

Nissan Says Next GT-R R36 will be Hybrid and Look Something Like This

Nissan-GT-R-Vision-2020-3052.jpg

Nissan is brewing up a replacement for its lauded GT-R with the brand's execs essentially confirming the use of a hybrid powertrain.

Nissan Great Britain's sports car chief, James Oliver, spoke to Top Gear magazine and said the next GT-R, codenamed R36, will "embrace electric power" and be even faster than the already outrageously fast R35.

"I think it [a GT-R hybrid] is the obvious direction," Oliver told the publication. "There's been obsessive development of the GT-R over the years, and at some point we will move onto the next generation car. The overall market is looking at different methods of powering cars, and at Nissan we've got great expertise and investment of electric.

"We already have the capability in terms of battery production and electric vehicle technology, so I don't think it's a great stretch to think a future performance product would have some of that tech incorporated into it," he added.

"When the R35 launched in 2009 it was a massive leap forward, and we need to make sure when the next generation comes, it's a similar leap forward. Not just the car itself, but the overall effect for Nissan," Oliver explained.

While the Nissan chief declined to disclose details about the R36's powerhouse, we think that it will be closely related to the new unit found in the Infiniti Q80 Concept from the 2014 Paris Auto Show.

Infiniti's four-door coupe study premiered a new high-performance hybrid powertrain consisting of a twin turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 and an electric motor for a combined 550hp. The next GT-R could feature the same or a similar setup ā€“ perhaps with one or more additional electric motors.

When asked about the sports car's looks, Oliver pointed to Nissan's Vision 2020 Concept for the Gran Turismo 6 racing game describing it as a "design study" for the GT-R R36. We interpret this as that the R36 will be heavily influenced from the concept pictured below.

He also answered a question in regards to Nissan's pricing policy stating that, "the overall approach will be performance on a par with much more expensive cars at a relatively affordable price". That doesn't really mean much, though, as in the U.S., for example, the GT-R's entry price shot up by more than 45 percent over the years, from $69,850 in 2008, to $101,770 in 2014.

Oliver didn't say when Nissan will release the R36, but Nissan's chief creative officer Shiro Nakamura told Autocar that it's "three to four years away", which places its introduction in 2017 or 2018, at least a year later than what we previously thought.

Both Nakamura and Oliver confirmed a facelift for the current R35. "Weā€™ve been improving it all the time," said Nakamura, "and thereā€™s still room to improve."

Oliver said something along the same lines: "I think we need to keep developing it and squeezing every last ounce of performance out of it. I think that our customers really value and respect the fact that it's being constantly honed and refined."

This means the partially camouflaged GT-R with the modified front end that we spied earlier this month in Germany is likely the facelifted model mentioned by the Nissan execs.

Now that is much better looking than the current GTR which isn't much of a looker at all.

That concept car in current form is terribly ugly, with an updated Ford GT90 feel, but with a lowered beltline I think they could retain a lot of the elements and have a great looking car.

 And no production car would ever look like that anyway.

That's like saying the FT-1 Vision GT concept is the basis for the next Supra. Look at this thing, the only place it can exist in a video game and concept form.

Nissan says R36 GT-R getting front-engined hybrid setup, due in 2018 at the earliest

20877815621085456771.jpg

Current car still has potential for more performance

Nissan Chief Creative Officer has shed some light about the next generation GT-R (R36).

In an interview with Top Gear magazine, Shiro Nakamura spoke briefly about the new GT-R and reconfirmed the model will adopt a hybrid powertrain with the combustion engine sitting in the front. He went on to specify the supercar "will also be a front-engined 2+2 seater coupe" and the R36 will indeed "be a hybrid, but not mid-engined."

Asked by TG whether the unofficial renders which emerged online are accurate, Nakamura said that none of them actually comes close to the real deal. He did admit the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo concept will influence the GT-R's front and rear fascias but not significantly as the concept was envisioned with a mid-engine layout.

Shiro Nakamura said the next generation Nissan GT-R won't come out sooner than 2018 because the company believes the current model still has potential for more performance and the added oomph will be implemented in an upcoming facelift already spied testing.

R36 GT-Rā€™s Twin-Turbo V-6 Derived From Unit In Nissan Le Mans Prototype

-nissan-gt-r-lm-nismo-lmp1-testing-at-ncm-motorsports-park-in-bowling-green-kentucky_100508991_m.jpg

Before he quit to take the top job at Aston Martin, former Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer said the next-generation GT-R, the R36, was being developed alongside the Japanese automakerā€™s new GT-R LM NISMO Le Mans prototype, which is set to make its competition debut this June at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

At the time, it was thought this mainly had to do with the high-performance hybrid system used on the race car. However, one of the key men involved in Nissanā€™s Le Mans program, DeltaWing designer Ben Bowlby, has now revealed that the engine of the race car will influence the design of the one in the next GT-R.

In an interview with Top Gear, Bowlby explained that the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 in the race car is an ā€œearly ancestorā€ of the unit that will end up in the next GT-R. He also said the combustion technology and the way the turbo and intake systems are integrated within the head design were all applicable for road car use.

And by taking it racing, Nissan is able to fast-track the development of the version going into the GT-R while also claiming to be using technology proven in racing. The engine in the GT-R LM NISMO develops around 550 horsepower on its own, which is similar to what the current R35 GT-R is producing, but itā€™s said to be much more fuel efficient too.

At present, the next GT-R is expected to go on sale in 2018, as a 2019 model. Itā€™s likely weā€™ll see the car make its world debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

3 liter in the next GTR sounds nuts. No way it's going to develop the same power as the LM, but I guess we can count on 400 real horsepower, plus battery power? Damn this thing is going to be portly.

Next-gen Nissan GT-R now being developed in North America and Europe, could spawn Infiniti sedan

R36 coming in more than two years

According to a Nissan insider, the next generation GT-R (R36) is now being developed in North American and Europe.

There were some rumors a while ago about freezing development of the new GT-R, but it seems that wasn't true as a source close to Nissan says they only moved R&D from Japan to North America and Europe. The same person went on to specify Williams is handling most of the R&D, but "obviously some development work is being done in Japan."

The insider cited by Motoring says a sedan version is in the works but apparently it won't be a Nissan as the company's bosses have decided to use the Infiniti badge, following the Q50 Eau Rouge's demise. This decision to come out with a GT-R sedan has been taken to attack the high-performance sedan segment and grab some sales from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche and the others. Interestingly, the insider sees the Lamborghini Estoque as a rival for Infiniti's GT-R, but as far as we know there aren't any plans for a production version of the 2008 concept.

It's unclear at this point whether the sedan will be available from day one, but they will probably decide to wait a while between the two models. Nissan chief creative officer Shiro Nakamura has already announced the next GT-R is more than two years away, so Infiniti's four-door sedan is unlikely to come out sooner than 2018.

GT-R sedan woo interesting. I can definitely see that stealing sales directly from Panamera, M5 and E63.

I'll take the 32 over the 34, 35, 36, and whatever computer driven concept is in that picture. The one and only true Godzilla!
