Our exclusive mule sighting confirms that Chevrolet means mid-engine business.

Behold, mid-engine Corvette fans: The car you’ve waited patiently for Chevrolet to build has finally evolved beyond titillating concepts to the engineering mule revealed here. An 82-second strike by our recon op resulted in 15 frames before security narcs dropped the curtain on this black test car—with its two occupants still inside.

Don’t fret over the pointy-pickup camouflage; more attractive attire will follow. Instead take solace in a cabin hugging the front axle, ample space between the cockpit and the rear wheels for the hot parts, and this Corvette’s crouched and ready attitude.

The nose clip is from Holden's Commodore SSV (with even wider flares), while the cabin module, roof, and exterior mirrors are hand-me-downs from today’s Stingray. A Holden SSV ute’s sheetmetal wraps door to door around the heinie. The wing keeps the tail planted during high-speed runs and what could be more practical than the bumper-mounted 2-by-10 for shoving this test sled back to the garage when it breaks down? Other items of note: The fuel-filler located on the driver’s-side B-pillar and the cooling intakes located along the rocker panels.

Scaling the span between the axles using the wheels as guides (we’re estimating them at 19 inches in diameter) yields a projected wheelbase of 98.9 inches, some eight inches shorter than that of today’s Corvette. That blueprint upgrade comes from bumping the transmission from ahead of to behind the rear axle as God and Dr. Porsche intended. A tighter wheelbase quickens steering response and cinches up the turning circle. It goes without saying that at least 60 percent of this probable Corvette ZR1’s mass will be supported by the rear wheels, enhancing launch traction and balls-out braking. There are rumblings that the engine bay may eventually play host to a small, 3.5- to 4.0-liter V-8 with all the fixin’s—meaning no pushrods.

Thus far GM has issued no denials discrediting our most recent (and highly detailed) mid-engine Corvette forecasts. While there’s no fresh intel regarding launch timing, the fact that experimental hardware has left the laboratory suggests that the C8 Zora sports car is on schedule to roll into showrooms in about 20 months as a 2017 model, at which point it will be sold alongside the front-engined Corvette. Place your orders now or find yourself stuck at the back of a long delivery line.

GM just upped the ante. That's about the craziest test mule I've ever seen. Looks like an ute.

Lutz spoke and GM smartly listened. Industry needs more mavericks like Lutz.

All car enthusiasts should be required to read Car Guys vs. Bean Counters. Great book by Lutz on the constant behind the scenes struggle between the numbers crunchers and the real car guys at auto companies.

Thought this was going to be vaporware but impressive to see Chevy actually pull it off. Extremely early for a mule tho? C7 only available starting last year.

Same old LSX V8 that's in every other Corvette and GM performance car, nothing special. And it's likely to suffer from the same ECU that pulls timing when you have too much fun.

If the car can somehow reside within that mule or if it looks anything like that concept, it doesn't hold a candle to the new Ford GT. Not even close.

Did GM Accidentally Give Us A Peek At The Mid-Engined Corvette?

Mid-Engine-Corvette-Sketch-720x340.jpg

During Americarna‘s recent visit to the General Motors design studio to film, the camera crew may have done us quite the favor in the process. While visiting Christine Park’s workspace, a designer at GM, the camera catches something of interest to us.

As the host is busy commentating about how Park suggests she’s working on a Chevrolet “sports car” (and says it looks quite like a Camaro), the show brushes over the real news happening here.

Beginning at the 1:21 mark, just to the right of Park hangs a design sketch board, and the vehicle on the right looks decidedly mid-engined if you ask us. A Corvette emblem also clearly adorns the design sketch, with C7-esque headlamps flanking massive wheel arches. Did we just have our first look at what GM is dreaming up for a mid-engined Corvette? It seems to be so.

We already know a mid-engined Corvette is surely under development, judging by the cleverly disguised prototype snapped running about in Michigan, wearing Holden Commodore Ute cladding. But until now, we could have only left design to our imaginations. This is the first time we have something even relevant to lay our eyes on, and a look at what the Corvette team may have up their sleeves.

The front fascia wears many wedges, and sharp design lines, akin to Corvette styling, but most definitely an elevation from where Corvette design has ever treaded. Besides this full-frontal view, side profile and rear design still are left to imagination.

We can’t imagine GM would be so naive as to leave this out in plain view, and then continue to allow cameras to roll capturing it within frame. Especially as Ed Welburn stands idly by. Maybe it’s nothing, but we’re pretty sure this really is something.

Have a look for yourself right down below.

All hail the Emperor! Chevy's Ferrari-fighter is almost here.

c8midengine-01-kgp-ed-1.jpg

It's real! After years of speculation, the mid-2019 Chevy Corvette has been caught during covert testing in Michigan. We've seen shots of this ghostly Vette in C7 bodies, but this is the first time we've captured it with a clear view of what appears to be an engine mounted amidships.

Codenamed the Emperor, according to the Detroit News, this Corvette will reposition Chevy's iconic sportscar to compete with European exotics and the Ford GT. The newspaper reports a front-engine Vette will still be sold concurrently for a few years after the launch of its more exotic sibling.

It's unclear what exactly the mid-engine Corvette will be, though we expect an intense focus on weight savings, aerodynamics, and use of materials like carbon fiber. Engine speculation has included a twin-turbo V6 and/or a more traditional V8. General Motors also has a 10-speed automatic transmission developed with Ford in its arsenal that's launching in the Chevy Camaro ZL1.

Reportedly, the mid-engine Corvette was being developed nearly a decade ago, but was delayed due to GM's bankruptcy in 2009. With GM's now-healthy balance sheet, the mid-engine Corvette appears to be fully revved for 2019.

Hmm What AM I driving?
I always wondering if maybe this isn't a Corvette, the Corvette will remain a FR but this is something new, something to go up against Ferrari and the Ford GT. WE will see.....
