It definitely sounds like the Toyota GR folks are testing that new 2.0L engine in a transverse MR configuration in a mule chassis to work out the final kinks in it under extreme driving conditions in that layout before doing something similar with it in production in another, newer chassis.
I'm really curious about it sizewise if they're testing it on a Yaris

it's supposed to be much more compact than traditional I4 and also much shorter.

This is the 1.5 liters shown here, but it should be the same for the 2.0

Hopefully it doesn’t take Toyota as long. 😂
Same, as it took around 6 years to develop the NSX. Perhaps Toyota has been in development longer as we already have a concept and a test mule.

I know this is AI generated but if the new Celica is anything like this with that new 400 hp 4-cylinder it will be a hit.

If none of the new turbo engine variants are used and we instead get basically one of the same engines but in a naturally aspirated tune... that's beginning to sound a lot like the same formula as the old 90's-00's 2.0L 3S-GE BEAMS (which had dual VVT-i and made 210hp).

The 3S-GE BEAMS was basically a turbo short block repurposed for NA much in the same way the old 2JZ-GE was derived from the 2JZ-GTE.

They'll have no trouble hitting the same or better power to weight ratio as the current 2,850lb 228-235hp GR86 even with likely higher curb weight.

Good luck hitting 230hp+ with a NA 2.0 and the current (and future) emissions regulation.

No chance they'll hit the same power to weight, especially if it has a higher curb weight.

It would need to be lighter for that to be possible.

Possibly so... but remember that ALL new models will have some kind of hybrid trim level available from MY2026 onward. We've known that for a few years now. No telling if that will mean EVERY trim level of every model or just one or two (the latter is more likely for GR vehicles).

So maybe Kirk is going to be proven wrong about the NA part or maybe it will be a revvy NA hybrid with a 6MT & AT. Or... we see some turbo hybrid 6MT & AT.

Kirk's reasoning is that he feels Toyota will avoid a turbo to keep the cost down. But these new "G" engines are going to see several different tunes in several different models. They're doing a very good job so far amortizing the costs. It is more likely they'll use a turbo "G" engine which will give them the emissions compliance they'll need.

However they are going about it they'll be focused on maintaining the current model's power to weight ratio or better, so my guess will be on the chassis being heavier than the existing one and the total horsepower and torque being increased beyond that of the current model.

Whenever an article has the words "Best Car Magazine" in it, I classify it as more make believe bullshit.
