The horsepower wars go nuclear

We're just a few weeks away from the official unveiling on the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V but spy photographer Chris Doane has revealed the model will have a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that develops 640 bhp (477 kW / 649 PS).

If Doane is correct, the CTS-V will use a slightly detuned version of the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that powers the Corvette Z06. It produces 650 bhp (485 kW / 659 PS) and 650 lb-ft (880 Nm) of torque in that particular model.

To put those numbers into prospective, the Mercedes E63 AMG has a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that produces up to 577 bhp (430 kW / 585 PS) in S guise. The BMW M5, on the other hand, has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with up to 567 bhp (423 kW / 575 PS) when equipped with the competition package.

More notably, the previous CTS-V had a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that developed 556 bhp (415 kW / 563 PS) and 551 lb-ft (746 Nm) of torque. This means the new model will have 84 bhp (62 kW / 85 PS) more than its predecessor.

640HP 2016 Cadillac CTS-V Priced From $83,995* In The U.S.

Cadillac's new pride and joy, the 2016 CTS-V high-performance sedan, will reach US showrooms late summer with a starting MSRP of $83,995 plus $995* for destination. GM's luxury brand will start accepting orders for the car this week.

Even though it's the most powerful model in its segment (which doesn't include Dodge's $63,995 and 707hp Charger SRT Hellcat) with a 640hp and 630 lb-ft (855 Nm) 6.2-liter supercharged V8 sourced from the Corvette Z06, the new CTS-V's price is lower than most of its competitors.

In the States, these include BMW's 552hp (560PS) M5 priced from $93,600 MSRP, Mercedes' 577hp (585PS) E63 AMG S 4MATIC that starts at $101,700 MSRP, and Jaguar's 503hp (510PS) XFR from $83,550 MSRP and 542hp (550PS) XFR-S from $99,000 MSRP.

On paper, the new-generation CTS-V is pretty darn fast with a 0-60mph (96km/h) in just 3.7 seconds (BMW M5: 4.3 sec, Mercedes E63 AMG S:3.5 sec, Jaguar XFR: 4.7 sec, XFR-S: 4.4 sec), and a top speed of 200mph (322km/h).

The supercharged V8 is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual control via steering wheel paddles driving the rear wheels.
Other standard features include Magnetic Ride Control, Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, carbon fiber hood, suede microfiber accents and matte-finish carbon fiber trim.

The new CTS-V will join the 455hp twin-turbo V6 ATS-V that will arrive late this spring with prices starting from $61,460 for the sedan and $63,660 for the coupe.
