The biggest issues with the BMW partnership is the fact that they are not a Japanese carmaker, and they don’t have a good reputation for reliability and ease of maintenance. People buy Japanese sports cars because they want Japanese engineering. I think the market would def be more receptive to...
In my opinion, the Supra won't get anything that one of the BMW M40i's don't already have. So if we don't see a 6MT in either of the Z4 M40i or M340i, i don't think we'll see one in the Supra 3.0 either. Development of a manual trans that mates to this iteration of the B58 has to start with BMW...
If the G20 M340i is seeing 346whp stock, that means it has more drivetrain loss than the Supra, so the Supra will have more power to the wheels after a tune than the M340i.
ToyotaBoy - great insight on the comparison! I'm super jealous of the M140i as those never came to the US. RWD and an I6 in a hatchback? What a dream! Do you know if the M40i BMW's have a similar response to mods as the Supra (ie. downpipe and tune for big gains)?
Can someone who has spent significant time with a good DCT shed some light on how the Supra’s ZF8 stacks up? How noticeable is the difference in shift speed? Do you miss the experience of a DCT? Do you prefer the ZF8?
Patience will absolutely pay off. If not in the form of a manual trans, then in the form of a lower price of entry (less ADM, second-hand market, etc.) and having any new-car bugs sorted out in subsequent model years.
According to BMW, the M240i with the auto (same drive train as the MKV) does 60 in 4.4 seconds, and that is with an extra 100+ lbs over the Supra. I don't think 4.1 seconds is that far-fetched.
