Such an awful article. Since he or other staffers haven't seen Supra's on the road they must not be selling? Such a stupid premise. It's been out for 3 months so why didn't he contact Toyota for sales figures? Lazy writer.
There are two halves to a year, each are 6 months. June is the sixth month of a year within the first half. It's pretty easy to understand the article. Also it said nothing about purchasing in the first half just production will start.
In contradiction the Toyota Japan news release says the...

First Production Supra to be Auctioned in January

PLANO, Texas, October 30, 2018 -- Confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in the auto industry, Toyota announced it will premiere its oft-teased and much-anticipated 2020 Supra at...
I'd do only basic mods if(when) I'd get a Supra. The engineers give the buyer a great canvas to work with but the canvas [as is] is still a quality product off the factory floor.
I'd rather have the auto. I've enjoyed manual trans for a long time. The auto in manual mode will outperform a standard manual. It shifts faster than any manual.
I used to dive with one hand but when I joined the SCCA and started to track my 86 I will only drive with 2 hands on the wheel at 9/3. The control is noticeable and inspires confidence. Now I know why most other countries teach the 9/3 method.
I think the Z4 will be more luxury setup and the Supra may (opinion) have;
-different trans (possible manual option)
-different suspension setup (sportier)
-different color choices
-fewer options (electronics, wheel choices etc.)
-performance packages eventually (TRD,GRMN)
blah blah blah
The M2 Competition has a nice trans option with launch control. It's mated to their I6 bi-turbo. This would be a great trans for the Supra unless they have something special planned for the 8HP. But I'm sure cost to the consumer is an issue too.
I didn't say BMW JUST provided an engine for the car but is providing an engine to the specs Toyota want's, just like Subaru did with the 86 FA20 engine.
Just a guess that they may use a performance trans specific for the Supra not in the Z4. Similar to the LFA trans.
This is all just a guess...
