I brought the wife's car in for service last week (same engine but in a real BMW) because the coolant was a smidgen low and the warranty is about to expire. They performed a pressure test and couldn't find any issues. The service writer (who I generally, mostly trust) said that it's very common for BMWs to consume a bit of coolant. I've rarely kept one for more than a couple of years, but I have seen this before. Her car is four years old, about 30K miles.
However, the pictures above do indicate some kind of leak (not a head gasket IMHO) so you guys and gals should get that diagnosed and resolved.
I will add though that the tech noted that the car cooling system had "not been properly bled". All I did was add some distilled water to the reservoir, nothing more. It turned off the warning, which was all I was concerned with at the time so that the wife wouldn't worry.
