- 2018 BMW M2; Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road
I posted this thread as an attempt to basically vent my frustration as to how Toyota among many other car manufacturers have devoted so much time and energy as well as research and development into Crossover's and SUV's while neglecting the development of Sports Cars.
Forum members Craigy and SupraStew85, thank you for liking my post, I appreciate you understanding the meaning of my post and liking it, again thanks.

I agree with you regarding some of the cars you recommend with the BMW M2 being my number one choice of the cars you mentioned. And not just the M2 but the forthcoming M2 Competition model. I like the specs and the idea of the Shelby GT350 but not interested in that car. Regarding the Stingray Corvette, it's a nice car. I do not own the Stingray Corvette but have access to one on a regular basis and drive it from time to time. I owned a C6 Corvette and initially loved it but soon fell out of love after approximately 6 months of ownership. I really like the Porsche Cayman S but would prefer to wait for the next generation of that model if I were to purchase one.Thank you for the well meaning response, I appreciate your reply.Price range was initially disclosed in the FT1 interviews to be $50,000-$60,000. I believe the latest details from A70 on this forum are also along those lines.
On the market right now, I'd say best comparisons in the price range would be the BMW M2, Shelby GT350, base model Cayman, base Corvette. Maybe even a Grand Sport vette or a Cayman S with typical discounts. I also wouldn't include most of the other stuff like sedans or hatches. A compelling argument could also be made for certain trims of the Camaro or even Mustang GT but I wouldn't cross shop them myself.
By the time this car comes out, each one of those comparison models will likely be new and improved, or at least facelifted, in some form or fashion.
I agree with your comments as well. As previously stated after spending much time in the Stingray Corvette and having previously owned a C6 Corvette, I know that's not the car for me. Perhaps the forthcoming all new Mid-Engine Corvette but that's still in development and I imagine it to cost more than $100K, which is just at the self imposed spending limit on my next car purchase. Regarding the Nissan Z, it was a great car. I've previously owned two Nissan 350Z's and one Nissan 370Z but as you mentioned the tech on the current Nissan Z is old and dated when compared to other cars of today. Thank you as well for your well meaning post, I appreciate your reply as well.If you limit yourself to RWD sportscars and exclude hot hatches, pony cars, and coupes/sedans like the M235i, there really are few comparable cars to go to if you can't wait (at least for the lower-end variant of the Supra). The BRZ/86 and Miata have far less power; the Corvette, Jag F type, and Cayman are all considerably more expensive. About the only rough equivalent is the 370Z in its upper trims, and that is very old tech.
On the contrary, money is an issue. I have imposed a spending limit on my next car purchase to not exceed $100K with hopes of increasing that amount as my business grows hopefully making it possible for me to one day be able to purchase my new dream car, the new McLaren 720S. Regarding the Nissan GTR, it's a nice car that's super quick but unfortunately I do not care to much for the exterior styling of the GTR and personally feel it's to big and bulky aesthetically. I'd like to also thank you for your well meaning post, I appreciate your reply.if money is not an issue maybe a GTR could be considered , it's a car that really continues the legacy of the skyline gtrs of the past and it is hellish fast.
I sincerely appreciate your optimistic prediction of the Supra possibly being revealed at the 2018 NAIAS. Based on the fact that you mention of the FT-1 concept being revealed there makes it more plausible of it actually happening. And thanks for obviously understanding my frustration of waiting such a long time for this car to actually be revealed. I thank you for your well meaning post and appreciate your reply.Right now, your best hope for any more official news from Toyota on the new Supra is going to be Detroit, NAIAS, in January. That's where they launched FT1, so there could be some hope of a return.
The most recent report I read on a timetable was "end of 2019." That's at least two years away. Realistically, maybe even 3 years before you and I have a shot at buying a car.
I don't know about you, but IMO either way you cut it, that's a tremendous amount of time to wait for what, if I'm being honest, is sounding more and more like it will be a very average sportscar offering. It's like we're in 1999 and we're eagerly waiting for the 350Z to hit in 2002. Except these days there's way more options on the market to choose from.
And this is coming from someone who has been a mkV supra superfan since the FT1 dropped in January of 2014.
I really like your reply. But regarding the an M2 being worth 1/2 of it's original MSRP, that's incorrect sir. Please check any of the numerous car value websites and you'll find that the low volume produced BMW M2 does a good job of holding it's value. But since you mention it, I am considering purchasing an M2 and selling it once the Supra is finally released for sale. I believe and look forward to the new Supra being absolutely amazing which is why I'm so impatient and venting about how long it's taking in development. I agree with you 100% regarding Toyota's development team painstakingly developing this car to get it just right. Thanks for your well meaning reply, I appreciate it.Toyota has always taken the "Polyphony Digital" approach to their new projects and this is no different. Every single step that the Toyota development team makes is carefully calculated and backed by hundreds of hours of analysis and testing. They are working day in-day out to make the best car according to their image, so why should we care if it takes a while? It's been 20 years, whats another few?
If you really need/want a new sports car, then get one. I'm sure you'll really enjoy an M2 and maybe even forget the Supra ever existed. Or maybe the Supra will be so amazing, you'll sell your Bimmer off for 1/2 it's MSRP to put a down payment on a Toyota.
The rest of us will happily sit here for another few years, having fun with wacky photoshops and occasionally-outlandish rumors, because we know Toyota doesn't mess around when it comes to sports cars.
By me purchasing an M2 will not be sticking it to Toyota, nor would that be my intent. My intent on purchasing a new sports car is to please myself and not to stick it to anyone or get back at anyone. The entire idea of that notion is filled with negative vibes which I purposely choose to stay away from. Negative vibes and thoughts only generate negative results. As previously stated i'm merely venting because I sincerely believe the Supra will be an absolutely amazing car and I sincerely want one. The problem is I want it now and there's nothing I can do about it. Basically that's it. Please do not confuse my frustration with Toyota as any type of malice towards them. On the contrary I have the utmost respect for Toyota and their development team. My venting should be seen as something akin to a kid in a toy store throwing a tantrum, kicking and screaming because he can't get what he wants when he wants it. I appreciate your reply as well and thank you for it.1st world problem much? if they don't come out with the supra soon you'll go for a bmw? lol..yes that is really sticking it to them....and btw, fact is out of all the economy brands toyota has had by far the most extensive sports car offerings yet no one was buying them, only a handful of people actually purchased any of the jdm legends (nsx/tt supra/3000gt/rx7).
