Hole in fuel tank, has anyone dropped or replaced theirs?

First post please don’t crucify me if I’m not doing this right. I searched to try and find a tread but my Guibo blew up and put a hole in my fuel tank. I’ve got a few quotes from shops in my area on but I’m wondering if anyone’s replaced the fuel tank on their car. The shop i had it towed to won’t itemize the quote and I’m under the impression the driveshaft needs to come out anyways before you can even drop the tank so everything would overlap and I should just be billed 5 hours labor for the fuel tank job and that’s no where near what they quoted me even if they are $300/hr

Looks to me once you have the prop shaft out it's maybe 2-3 hours work to remove, swap components and re install the tank. Those hours would be on the generous side I think.

I’ve had a similar situation before where a part like the driveshaft had to come out to access the fuel tank, and it definitely adds to the labor time. In my case, the shop tried to charge me way more than I expected, and I ended up asking them to break down the quote to make sure I wasn’t getting overcharged. I would recommend doing the same—ask for an itemized list of what they’re charging for, especially if they’re not explaining why the labor is so high. It could be a good idea to get a second opinion or check with another shop to see if their rates seem more reasonable. You might be able to save a bit if they’re overlapping tasks.

5 hours sounds fair. remove driveshaft. disconnect filler neck and hoses from charcoal canister. drain fuel tank and remove. transfer pump to new tank. what was your quote?
Now if the rear subframe needs to be removed as well that may be the reason for your high number. it more than doubles. it all depends on how the filler neck is routed if under the subframe or over and around it.

No need to drop the subframe per the shop manual.

I ended up just going through with the shop. The original quote was $2900 or so $950-1000 in parts the rest in labor. I've since gone back to ask for it itemized which they still didn't do but they did drop the price $500 for the overlap. Seems like they were trying to pull a fast one they said they put together the original quote based off a z4 which would take more time.
