I just got the warning on my '21 3.0 premium has 11k miles, I also had residue around the cap. Hopefully it's not a leak, but I just ordered the coolant and I'm going to top it off. If it does go away, I'll end up taking it to the dealer.
I received the low coolant message this past week at 20k. I freaked a little thinking there was a leak. No signs of one but I just had the last free Toyota care service done 3 weeks ago and they “topped everything off”. I took it back in and Toyota said the engine coolant reservoir took a “cup”...
No code was thrown which was stranger for it being empty and having the sensor on it since it’s the larger tank. Do you recommend any specific aftermarket cap? Thanks
That doesn't sound good, residue can indicate a small leak but it shouldn't be empty, did the car throw up a code or a message on the dash about low coolant?
I have the stock cap, no residue, but I think most guys are getting aftermarket ones when replacing.
...coolant. I checked my larger coolant tank and it was basically empty. The smaller tank was still filled to the max. The car has 25k. I see people replacing the coolantcap it seems to fix the issue. Are people replacing with another OEM cap or are you guys switching to CTS or Versus caps? TIA
...yeah looks like it. I'm not sure if replacing the cap is what people usually suggest; might be worth doing. I didn't see any residue on either of my coolantcaps. Maybe it's normal for it to need topping off at some points (i just hit 20k miles) so guess i'll be checking the levels going forward.
Okay great, that's what I was confused about. Topped it up exactly the same and so far so good
I'm a little convinced my cap might be bad (which is apparently a common issue) as there's quite a bit of dried up residue on the threads.
That's strange - I never heard of that process before.
I just go with the 'MAX' level in the larger reservoir of the two, but always with the car totally cold.
...day and wanted to double check what the procedure is for topping it off. I see in the manual that we just top off the reservoir and cap it, but the actually coolant bottle from BMW specifies to run the engine with the coolantcap off until it warms up. Can anyone please confirm the correct...
I’d give Turner Motorsports a call. They are very helpful with our BMW and the B58 engine in particular

Same issue 2020 MKV with 16k miles! I did some research and it looks to be coming a common problem and no one seems to know exactly what’s causing the problem. Car was checked by both BMW and Toyota technicians… one tec did a pressure test and coolant flush and the other BMW tec replaced the...
last week i noticed a "coolant low - refill" warning ... naturally i topped up then set about finding the reason.... and again "its a typical BMW issue" the rubber on the cap had pinched so venting over a period of time .... a bit of silicone and a cleanup fixed it.
but .. i also checked the...
Sorry for the lack of update.
They said they pressure tested everything and didn't see any signs of a leak. So, I guess I am going to be ordering ANOTHER cap in hopes it gets fixed as I still smell coolant and some has been lost. I don't drive the car that much so it's not getting empty.

Thanks for the heads up on that cap. And I honestly don't know if the bolts are longer than factory. I bought the spacers from another forum member, the member included the lug nuts, but i didnt need them.
