Over the last month, the frequency of the iDrive system crashing has increased. It now happens on almost any drive longer than about 5 minutes. They system will go blank, and takes a minute or 2 to reboot. This happens in a wide variety of conditions, including when the parking/backup camera...
On a related note, the OEM hood "vents" are the second official part I can find on the car saying they were manufactured by Toyota. Note the "J29" designator as well. I thought that was cool.
I've had about a half dozen previous iterations of this engine in prior BMWs (N54, N55, and a 2017 440i with the B58). The N54s needed about a quart every 4-6k miles, pretty routine. I occasionally had to add to the N55. Never got the add-oil message with the prior B58. At 3k miles and 4...
Another reason you're unlikely to see manual transmission in many models is the growth of active safety features. For example, pedestrian collision mitigation basically requires an automatic, as do many other features such as lane keeping. These features are highly regulated in most...
Regarding switching to parking assist mode. There's a setting in iDrive to auto-recognize parking situations and turn this on. It's not 100%, it sometimes mistakes normal, low-speed driving to a parking situation. If this bothers you, it can be turned off in the settings.
There's one more setting worth doing. Enable daytime screen brightness control. Absolutely essential. Puzzling that this defect slipped through QA with Toyota.

Depending on...
AFAIK, you can't. Need to physically undo 2 clips and pull the ECU up a few inches. The date is on the label. Takes 10 seconds once you know what to do, no tools needed. Several videos around showing the procedure.
