You would have to pull them apart and look at the cage that houses the bearings, usually that is what grenades - not the actual metal axle or splines.

Sounds about right -with that price I'm assuming you are going Catless. You would probably gain 100hp/100tq with an OTS (off the shelf) tune. If you think that is too much, take a peek at what headers and tune on a corvette/camaro/mustang cost and what gains you get for that :)
