I don't remember who the source was but I think I remember reading that BMW was going to make a smaller roadster possibly Z3/ Z4 and a bigger roadster Z5 from this shared platform. Whether one is coming out later on could be a possibility. Maybe they'll make the Z5 in 3 yrs after the smaller one is out and allow the Supra/FT-1 to have a Targa version then as well.

BMW and Toyota are jointly producing a new sports car, but contrary to popular belief, the BMW model will not be called the Z5.

Details about the sports cars are as scarce as honest politicians, which is why internet speculation about these two models has been rampant for years. Automotive journalists (including us) have been reporting that these cars would be called Z5 and Supra, respectively. But that is dead wrong, at least for the Bavarian half of this partnership.

“There’s no such thing,” said BMW Americas boss Ludwig Willisch during an interview with AutoGuide.com. If anyone’s familiar with the top-secret sports car project, it’s him.

Tempering any fears that this highly anticipated duet of vehicles has been canceled, he clarified, “There will be a sports car, yes, but it’s not going to be a Z5. That’s something that someone else has made up.”

When pressed for details Willisch said, “It will be called Z… probably 4.” Of course, the last roadster BMW built carried the same name, but the Z4 unceremoniously went out of production around the middle of 2016.

During its multi-year production run, this roadster offered a range of engines including a base turbocharged four-cylinder as well as an upmarket inline-six that also benefited from exhaust-driven forced induction.

Is a straight-six going to find its way under the hood of BMW’s upcoming “Z probably 4”? Willisch said, “I would call it a Z4 [and] that’s no indication of the number of cylinders.” That sounds like a confirmation that an inline six will at least be on the menu for this upcoming machine.

As for hybridization or all-wheel drive, things are a bit murkier. Willisch noted a partially electrified drivetrain might benefit a modern sports car, but he said, “not so much,” for the availability of four-corner traction. Hybridization is Toyota’s area of expertise. One element of their corporate tie-up is they share electric secrets with BMW while the Munich-based firm delivers diesel engines to them.

Another element of the next-generation Z4 that’s also unclear is whether a manual gearbox will be available. BMW may offer more standard transmissions than anyone else, but the future of driving with three pedals is murky.

Even for the brand that prides itself on building Ultimate Driving Machines, the take rate for manuals in America is, at best, in the single digits. “Even a lot of people say… ‘That’s great, you still have them,’ ” said Willisch. “But you ask them, ‘What do you drive?’ [and they say] ‘Well, I have an automatic.’ ”

Not even BMW is immune to market forces; they can’t send out loads of cars equipped with manual transmissions that will sit on dealer lots for months on end. “If the customers don’t want it, we don’t have to offer it,” said Willisch, which is a painful truth. We sincerely hope plenty of drivers will want to row their own gears in the upcoming “Z probably 4.”

So seems like if BMW has anything to do with the Toyota drivetrain, we won't be getting a manual :(

Nice to hear some real commentary from a real source. Funny his comments about how someone made up the name Z5, and that it was never going to be the Z5. Virtually all of the articles and "sources" described the car as the forthcoming "Z5" and it was pretty much accepted as a given, taken for granted that the car would be called Z5.

Hopefully half of the "knowledge" from other "sources" about the Supra will be also be found to be similar hogwash.

The next Z4 is not called Z5

http://www.autobild.de/artikel/bmw-z4-z5-2017-erste-infos-5257988.html

BMW continues to work on the new roadster. The successor to the Z4 is to become a real athlete and is developed in cooperation with Toyota. Also an M-model could come!

The next roadster from BMW is again hot Z4, which announced the North American head of the brand, Ludwig Willisch. This is the rumors that the sports car Z5 is hot, from the table. The AUTOBILD-Erlkönigjäger have the BMW Z4 already on test drivePhotographed at the polar circle. Unlike the expired Z4, which was rather luxurious, the new is again a real sports car. The model is the Z3 . The ingredients sound promising: low weight, rear wheel drive and possibly up to 431 hp,

First information about the new Toyota Supra
With the new Z4 the first cooperation model of BMW and Toyota will be presented. Toyota is primarily responsible for the electronics and for the hybrid drive. While the Toyota Supra is to be launched as a coupé, BMW relies on the classic soft top for its roadster.

Z4 M with M4 engine?
On the engines BMW is using its own units. The 340 HP strong six-cylinder from the M240i could be used as provisional top-engine. Possibly the axes of the roadster come from the sports model M3 . Whether the internal G29 Z4 will also come as a genuine M model, is not yet certain. A possible BMW Z4 M could be fired by the 431 hp engine from the M3 / M4 . It is expected to be presented in 2017 before rolling to retailers in 2018. The price list of the Z4 will start at around 35,000 euros.

That Toyota and BMW work together on a sporty duo is already known. The cars, which may be called Supra and Z5, are likely to look like this!

BMW and Toyota are currently working together in hybrid technology and diesel engines. That's smart because, while the Japanese are busy with partially electrified driving lines and in the field to be the world's top, BMW's diesel engine is getting more and more fine. Also, when it comes to fuel cell technology, the two companies are looking for each other, but the collapse of cooperation is the duo that can be seen on these pages prematurely.

The name "Supra" says it already: this Toyota is a serious sportieveling. With its rear-wheel drive, long nose, short butt and specially-shaped roof, there's a car in the Toyota showrooms that has to revive the times of earlier Supra's, MR2's and Celics.

Lascivious
The appearance of the car is inspired by that of the FT-1, a concept car that was presented on Detroit's auto show in 2014. The specially shaped nose and double bubble on the roof return to the production model. With his luscious lineup, the Supra is a real imagomaker for the Japanese. Despite the GT86, the brand with many car enthusiasts still has a somewhat dusty, sensible image. That's the reverse side of the basically amazingly functioning hybrid technology, which gets into hands in each other's hands. With the Supra, Toyota shows that the theme "driving pleasure" has not been forgotten.

Although a hybrid variant is unthinkable, four and six-cylinder petrol engines seem to be a more logical step for the two-seater. If Toyota wants to honor the name 'Supra', it can not be beneath a (double) blown V6. V, indeed, because the Toyota and BMW use their own power sources in the Supra. In the walkways, powers of 192 and 340 horsepower surround, which would at least be heard by the call for appealing performance.

Six-in-line

The fact that engines are not shared is also good news for BMW enthusiasts. They can now enjoy the so-typical six-in-line sound exclusively. In the Z4 sequel, this is especially good, because the new model will be a roadster. Both the Z3 and the first Z4 have coupé versions, but they have always been a lot more rare than their open brother. The current Z4 lacks such a dense variant, because this version is considered unnecessary due to the hard hit roof of this roadster. The Z returns the traditional fabrics.

V shape
Outstanding matches with his Toyota brother are hardly any, only the windshield and exterior mirrors match. The Japanese and Germans also assemble their own dashboard and furniture. The basic shape of both cars, of course, has the necessary similarities: BMW's next Z model also gets the traditional sports car silhouette with a long nose and a short ass. Striking style features of the Z5 are the headlamps, which are in a strong V-shape relative to each other and are positioned very high in the front. Behind that striking front are, of course, not only six-in-line engines, but also the four-cylinder we know of other BMW models. Expect, like we are used to BMW, a whole range of engines, ranging from power 200 to 300 hp. Whether there is an M version in the container is not clear yet. The 'regular' versions, like the Toyota Supra, are likely to be in the showrooms of both brands in 2018. Before that time, however, there will be more and more information about this lovely sporting pair.

Future model will retain Z4 moniker instead of adopting Z5 name, as previously rumoured

BMW will offer an early glimpse of its next Z4 roadster with the Z4 Concept, which will be shown at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance this August.

The new open-top concept, currently in the final stage of construction, has been conceived to preview to the new third-generation Z4, which is planned to go on sale in late 2018 as part of what BMW’s head of sales and marketing, Ian Robertson, describes as the most comprehensive new model push.

The 2017 Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance kicks off on August 16th and runs through to August 20th.

Codenamed G29, the new 2019-model-year Z4 is being developed in a joint engineering program between BMW and Toyota, which will sell a coupé version as the Supra.

The two cars, which have been seen testing in development form on public roads for several months, will be produced alongside one-another at Magna in Austria.

BMW is said to have retained the Z4 name for its future model, rather than using Z5 as previously rumoured, because Z5 won’t fit with its naming structure, which uses even numbers for performance models.

This is backed up by internal correspondence relating to the G29 project, which all refer to the car as the Z4.

The production Z4 will arrive three months after the new 8 Series, which is due in 2018 and is previewed by the Concept 8 Series.
