What do shops/brands expect to receive in return when they do partnerships/sponsorships?

Seems if you don't have a huge social media following, there isn't much to be gained for them.

How does one even approach a shop/brand to start something up?

The better question is what can you offer them.

But in short, they expect a return on their “investment” so you will need a good amount of following/influence in the community. You will also need to be able to create high quality content like photos and videos that they can use for their marketing.

Honest and genuine question, what can you even offer them if you don't have a huge social media following?

Even if your social media channel isn't the largest, if you're creating exceptional videos that stand out from the content online, whether through top-notch installations or unique ideas that make your videos special, we can help.

Vendors like us can take your unique videos and manage to get them to a wider audience, even if your own channel's reach isn't that big. However, your content needs to be truly exceptional for a vendor to choose to sponsor you, given the many options we have with larger channels that can do all the heavy lifting

You don’t need a huge following. In fact, having an active follower base in a niche community like Supra owners is a lot more valuable than having a 100k of random followers.

Besides an audience you will also need photography/videography and editing skills to create quality content that showcase the parts they sponsor you with.

If you are influential they will reach out to you.

if you are not influential, then sometimes brands offer sponsorship applications. You have to bring something special for them to do it.

I got two very small “sponsors”, I applied sent them pics of the build and they gave me sponsor discounts. In exchange I have their logo on my build and I sent them pictures of the car, which I don’t even take, just go to your local car meet, plenty of content creators there, just be sure that they tag you, keep an eye for the content and be sure that the sponsors see It and tag onto that.

I wasn’t looking into getting sponsors, just happened to see them advertising and called them. What’s the worst could happen?
I ended up saving almost a couple thousand on parts.

as you see, the only brands I carry on my car were from people that gave me a sponsor discount, and because I am not famous I have to have a build that will be picked up in Social media.

why wait for the vendor? when you are ready you should reach out and make a good case on why they should be sponsoring you

They expect sales. If you can't essentially be a contracted salesman, then you're right - there isn't' much to be gained for them.

I've gone down/seen a couple routes to this with smaller creators.
Usually you pay full-price. Then they either refund a portion of the price for every sale that mentions you, or they sign you up with an affiliate agreement so you get a percentage of sales as a commission.
The other option is that they offer you a mild discount. As sales come in that mention you referred them, they will offer bigger discounts in the future to continue the partnership.

Basically, I recommend you offer that you'd like to demonstrate your reach instead of just asking for free parts. It shows you're serious and not just trying to take take take - but you understand that it has to go both ways.
