Stock "sub box/metal frame"

I am a complete noob to the Supra but I have not found this in the forums yet. Does the metal ...... rectangle that the sub enclosure affix to need to remain in the car? Is it a structural piece or merely some cosmetic mount to make the blasphemous "subs" stand up tall and appear as if though they are beneficial?

Some guys have removed them. I left mine on and built on top
