One of the junior engineers originally told me they were testing the DCT if folks recall, but it ended up getting cut. I'd like a DCT, but were lucky enough to be getting the 6spd and not just the ZF8.
THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST THING YOU'VE SAID ON THIS FORUM :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry: :puke::puke::puke::puke::puke:

While i never had a daily driver with dct i have seen it in action and dunno it felt a bit awkward. I always drive manuals tho and want to be in control all the time . But anyway for me even if i prefer stick but i am pretty sure i could make an exception for a car i have been waiting for ages.We will see , i am pretty optimistic myself.

the ZF 8 speed is AMAZING. DCTs are unnecessary in this class of car. we're not talking about supercars here. as mentioned, the giulia quad uses the ZF 8 speed and it's tuned so well most people can't tell it isn't a DCT.

ATs have a few advantages over DCTs:
-torque converter makes for smooth operation at low speeds
-lock up clutch makes "slushbox" a thing of the past
-planetary gearsets give you more gears in same space
-can take MONSTER torque for relatively cheap (dodge demon uses ZF 8 speed)
-torque converter can be replaced with a wet clutch or an MGU for mild hybrid

DCTs are amazing, but you probably need a supercar to see real benefits. in an everyday sportscar like the supra, a ZF 8 speed is perfect...

...lucky enough to be getting the 6speed.

If that’s true that’s all that remains for me in terms of a deal breaker. All of the other hurdles for what I want from this car, the looks, the low weight, power to weight ratio etc. appear to be on par for what I wanted. The actual release date concerns me because it so casually keeps getting pushed out further and further. That and the fact that higher performing models could be released at an even later time or holding out initially on the 6 speed with no true confirmation would be disingenuous to the buyer. I tend to believe that Toyota will do the right thing.

i sincerely don't see any advantage of DCT's over the ZF's 8HP series of AT's.

8hp's are mostly faster shifting, bullet proof (holds tons of torque, can hammer it with worrying it would break). Also, depending on the car maker's programming, 8HP can down shift 2 gears at once or bounce the rev-limiter instead of up-shifting. DCT's notchi'ness get tiresome after awhile, have an EVO X MR; not the "smoothest" transmission out there.

for the J29 though; its an MT for sure!

Oh another question. Why didn't Toyota release the dimensions for the FT-1? I know there were specs for GT6, but were those accurate?

The FT-1 was a design study not a working prototype:

Toyota FT-1 Concept
Length- 4,675 mm (184.05 in)
Width- 1,970 mm (77.55 in)
Height: 1,225 mm 48.22 in)
Wheelbase: 2,740 mm (107.87 in)

Based on GT6 it had 485-521hp and weighed 2910 lbs

It had been said that the FT-1 had exaggerated proportions to give the car more of a visual impact on the show circuit.

For reference the Corvette, 911, MKIV and LFA all have a length of 177-178’’

The last gen Z4 and the current GT86 are 167’’

the FT1 was built on an extended and widened ZN6 platform, so it makes sense it was around 2900lbs given the lightweight materials and electric powerplant. I dont know anything else about it though.

I do recall them saying it was made 10% larger for stage presence. I'm just curious why Toyota never released the dimensions on the press release.

Speaking of concepts, are we getting a near production concept anytime soon? Or will Toyota just go straight to a production version?

A "concept" should come first, but the car should be pretty close to production ready form versus something more outlandish like the FT-1.

Production is set to begin at the very end of next year, so the real question is when will they debut the concept? It pretty much has to be Detroit or Chicago.

Although, the 86 may provide some clues, so we might see it at Geneva as a curveball.

86 timeline:

October 2009: initial concept shown in Tokyo (this would be FT-1 for the Supra, but it was Detroit 2014 so there are definiely differences plus being behind schedule)

March 2011: final concept revealed in Geneva

October 2011: production ready car shown

February 2012: first run of vehicles complete

March 2012: sales begin

April 2012: delivery

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So maybe:

January/February/March 2018: final concept revealed

October/November 2018: production ready car shown (we know from the dash placard that production begins in November)

February/March 2019: first run of vehicles complete

March/April 2019: sales begin

April/May 2019: delivery

Thats a little odd. Aren't the only auto shows for October/November 2018 is LA?
