Why are the hardtops so much better? Just because of issues with the targa?

I love the idea of a targa, you get convertible-like openness but retain a coupes lines, best of both worlds in my opinion.
yea the seals probably go bad and you get additional chassis flex...personally I don't care about the latter issue, I'm not a track junkie nor do I care to try to push a car to its limits on pubic roads so a targa would be a cool option to have.

Stiffness, stiffness, stiffness (and weight). Once you feel how much sharper the car is with a roof on it, it's tough to go back. One of the main reasons why I was anti sunroof/targa/convertible during the 86 development was for the same reason, and that chassis is an absolute masterclass in engineering when it comes to stiffness, weight, and space. Judging just the chassis alone, the Zx6 platform absolutely shits on cars costing 3-4x as much with how well it was designed and put together.

Tada-San has said that the Supra will be 2x stiffer than the FRS, which if we stay at 1380kg, is absolutely insane. Just the thought of it makes me giddy with how good this car will be to drive.

Now, one would say there could always be both, as options. But the problem with that is that the unibody design on both the coupe and targa would inherently be changed due to the provisioning of added stiffening elsewhere in the targa. This means added weight. And even though the coupe wouldn't use whatever stiffening elements the targa would use, the inherent design change means there would be a weight difference vs the simpler coupe-only design. Not to mention, the added manufacturing processes generally means a price increase for the consumer.

That being said, targas are fun in the summertime. I wouldn't mind a targa version somewhere down the line on a facelift model. As long as the Mk5.1s are all as hardcore as possible.

After owning 10 targa TT MKIVs, I drove one hardtop NA and immediately regretted not getting hardtops since day 1.

Hardtops are best tops.
Don't take it as an insult.


How in the fuck did you afford 10 MK 4 Supra targa tops?!?!

Hhaha, the difference between hardtop and targa top is night and day.

Hardtop = Handling and supreme performance
Targa = Cruising, wind in your hair chilling.

Owned both, really comes down to if you are willing to sacrifice ride quality for fun factor in a semi convertible.

Targa Top major downfall is the annoyance of removing and squeeks and rattle overtime when driving top on.

A Supra without a targa isnt even a Supra. All the "mah handling" crap is a red herring. If you were that concerned with handling, you wouldn't even be looking at a GT car in the first damn place.

Its always funny going to the big Vegas and Texas Supra meets. Talking with someone with a hardtop is like "ohhh... I'm sorry... are you eventually planning on getting an actual Supra?" It's almost as bad as talking with the NA or auto guys.

Still gotta ask considering how hard it is to get a Supra this day and age at the appreciation it has received.
I've never paid more than 25k for a Supra. A decade ago you could get clean turbo cars for 18-20k all day. Nowadays that's definitely not possible, so you have to be very patient to find the right one.

I remember paying 15,500 for this beautiful thing many years ago

I hate that my A70 is a targa... HATE it.

I will never own another one and for me its all about weight and chassis flex. the seals thing is meh, but it's more livable than the former two items.
I have seen you comment on the engine/tranny acouple times, but searching I couldnt find if you had directly commented on this or not.

Is there gonna be a targa option?

The frameless doors on the test mules and the way the roof meets the windshield give me hope. But there always seems to be extra paneling around the c pillars rear of the roof, so I cant tell.

No irony. Hard toppers may as well be celica owners. Which is why I would routinely ask them if they planned on actually buying a Supra. But then again, I am an ass. ;)

There was a reason radically fewer hardtops sold.

Have you driven both? The hardtops are objectively stiffer, that's just inherent of having a full structure. In my comparisons, turn in response is better and they aged far better than the targas in regards to the rear end shimmy that so many MKIVs have due to bushing wear. Of course, you can just add braces to the targa (my current car has this), but the hardtops have a weight advantage still.

They're obviously not worth the massive premium that they fetch over targas, but the Supra market is obscenely inflated, so that's just how it is. If I had to pick between one or the other for no difference in money, I'd take the hardtop all day though.
