What does everyone think about another sprint weekend? I think we've bashed Checo enough so how about race formats?

Eh, I’m just a little to old maybe or I just don’t follow closely enough to know the schedule for the weekend.
See, I’m at the age where if I commit something new to memory something else gets squeezed out of my brain. I can’t take the risk that it’ll be something important!! ?

Should be exciting to watch! Totally diggin it :)

Instead of listing who crashes the most, checkout who is at the bottom of the list this year:

https://www.mostlyf1.com/statistics/standings/2023-destructors-championship-standings/

DR shouldn’t be on there since he hasn’t been driving all season. So that leaves us with Max, Lewis & Alonzo. Not surprising but more reason to luv em!

Looks like we’re going to have 11 teams on the grid! Personally I think 12 teams is kinda perfect for racing but I’m super stoked that we ā€˜probably’ will have an 11th.
What happened to the 12th?

The FIA denied 3 other teams that applied to be included. I just think that 24 cars and 24 drivers is a good amount. 20 seems a bit light of a grid to me. JMHO.

They want 24 competitive cars. Not 20 competitive cars and 4 rolling chicanes like we had with HRT and Manor.

I like the spring races, just extra wheel to wheel racing, what’s not to love? Other than kind of a screwy weekend with a qualifying on Friday for the race on Sunday. I kind of preferred when the spring determined the trip for the GP. But the shootout is a lot of fun with less time and more action I find.

I’m finding we (wife and I) love it all. You guys are a wealth of info and add to the fun! My old lady has now pushed our entire Netflix queue/list aside and got us watching drive to survive season 1. Which we finished and now on season 2. We started somewhere around season 4 - and got hooked. Anyways, it’s fun to look back and see the predictions, where the guys were at, and who was doing what.

I really think this has evolved for the better. Being a newer F1 addict (not set in my ways), the sprint race, qualifying, spending limits are all huge improvements.

Lance was so mad because he didn’t do a good enough job to get his weekly allowance.

Continues to make rookie mistakes in F1. Has no business in the seat. IF thats not more evident this year then when will it be. Ultimate question - IF you managed an F1 team would you hire him? I can give the same answer Ive been giving since he arrived = HELL FKN NO.

Being a McLaren fan, this was one of the best weekends. Oscar is doing an amazing job this year and I’m so glad they extended him. The key for the team is to do a good job in not favouring one over the other too much and cause friction. In fact, if I was their boss I would let them battle it out in qualifying and whoever is higher up the grid, gets first dibs on strategy. In race it’s a bit harder because there are so many variables. I think Mercedes does the best job of this currently. I do think Norris is the faster driver currently.

Perez had a weekend to forget, the spring was not his fault, but the race itself he just couldn’t keep it within the lines. That being said, he started from the pit lane and scored points, so he still did a very good job, just could have been better had he not been penalized or been taken out of the sprint race.

Poor Ferrari with some bad strategy in the sprint followed by a car not capable to driving for the GP. Not sure they will do well enough here on out to pass Mercedes in the standings.

Lastly, there was the Mercedes boys. I think they had a great sprint and covered off both strategies well. I feel like Ferrari should have done the same and split their tire strategy for the sprint. Lewis got very greedy on that first corner in the GP. I think he expected Russel to back off and allow him through to fight with Max, but George was having none of it. I feel like that should have been talked about before the race. Something like,ā€George, we are giving Lewis the better tires so that he can push Max at the start of the race and compromise Max’s tires, at which point both should drop off allowing you to take over shortly into the race similar to the sprint when the softs fell off quicklyā€. Is it just me or does it seem like Lewis is one of the few drivers who will admit his mistake and apologize, taking full responsibility and not doing that bad habit of ā€œmy fault BUT so and so caused me to do this, or the car, or whatever.ā€ He just admits his mistake and apologizes to all parties involved. George had a fantastic GP from there, and it makes me think that Mercedes car was likely the second fastest car on the grid. Had they done a clean race, both likely would have challenged for second place.

Lastly, Max, what can anyone say other than fastest car, most consistent driver, one of the fastest drivers on the grid, and the best team behind him. The results were expected and unsurprising. I just wish we could see Max battle more and have a better challenge for race wins.

I believe Hamilton was at fault, I think he should've been just a little bit wider and he would've been fine. BUT this is a very interesting angle of the accident that wasn't shown on tv. Im not trying to absolve Lewis from anything, but it sure does look like Russel ... twitched???

Edit: actually, watching it .25 speed twitch was a bad word to use, looks like he just understeered a little.

OMG where to start... I'm becoming less and less of a Russel fan. Sorry but he should have known Lewis was there and stayed more steady at the wheel (I was thinking the same as you) or let him by. It's Lewis Hamilton for F* sake! He needs to sit back, shut up and learn from the master. There's a reason why Lewis, Alonzo and Max have the least crashes. Because they are that much better. ANd what the hell was that radio call "hey guys, I want to pit with only 4 laps to go". He seems to alwyas be swinging from the fences. He's a good driver, no doubt. But he's no Lewis Hamilton by any means. Thank you, Toto, for calling in and saying shut up just drive George. And where is Toto??? He needs to come back and babysit George, reel him in...

Secondly, how do they get to host the greatest of all motorsport races only to decide they need to change the track the night before? What a mess for those drivers. Understandable they were having such a hard time.

Third, that heat. It didn't seem safe. One dude is puking in his helmet. Others are cracking their visor up to try and get some relief. Last week Alonzo was thrown to the lions. This week he was thrown into an oven. They all were. You'd think they'd have to make those cars safer in that regard or ditch that location.

Lastly, Oscar. Wow, Oscar! Talk about incredible rookie. That kid is brilliant, to say the least. He's way too cool for his age. You've got Lance shoving his trainer and Piastri on the other spectrum. This might give Lando the shove he needs to really push himself to the Max level. That kind of competition coming out of his own team. What perfect synergy for McLaren.

Yes ideally George would have backed out and let Lewis by, but I don’t think he was paying as much attention to Lewis as he was Max. After that point though, you have to admit he drove a very good recovery race.

You mention the heat and FIA should do something, well thinking about the other big open wheel racing league, Indy Car will mandate a little wing on the top of their car that directs some air onto the driver, if the heat is at a certain level. I think that F1 could do the same, but it would have to be mandated. Something from the past that you might not know about, years ago F1 cars had a little vent that let air pass through and hit the drivers, but drivers found out if they put their hand over this vent it impacted drag and they could go faster on straights. So they got rid of it due to drivers taking their hands off the wheel while driving down straights at very high speeds.

I'm not putting anything on Russel. It was Lewis that was just a little too close, all I was pointing out is I never seen this angle and it does make it look as if Russel may have had some understeer. the angle of Lewis and Max look almost the same, wheels almost directly in line with each other, Russel's wheels offset. this is right before the contact.
