Never realized the MKIV Supra was actually the smallest one yet. Usually cars just get bigger over its life. If the MKV Supra comes in at 175-180 inches it should still be a good size (not too big and not too small)
Yup, most people that I have talked to are surprised when they find out that the MKIV is shorter and lighter than the MKIII.

Ah no wonder it looks so huge when they put it next to the previous gen Supras! Glad to hear it was upsized just to give it more stage presence. It will look even better and sportier when they shrink it for production. :headbang:

Despite its dimensions it really doesn't look that much bigger because the design is so tight and overhangs so short.

But it does look like it's from another millennium, which I guess is technically true :)

The Z5 prototype looks big and bland btw. They better be hiding a lot more impressive bodywork under that camouflage.

I know it's not apples to apples comparison but the FT-1 blows the Z5 away, no matter what is hiding under the camo. One has flowing shapes everywhere and the other (Z5) is just a wedge. I find German styling so bland compared to Japanese design.

BMW insider SCOTT26 said the car is covered in panels screwed / faux shaping to help disguise the real design. Good example is the Lexus LC.
Clever. I know they do amazing things to conceal the true shape using foam and padding but the screwing actual panels to the car and using the swirly black and white camo to make it seem like that's the true shape is really going out of their way.

I still have faith just based on the FT1 that the Supra will be the better looker.

I think the Zagato concept will influence the next Z.

The M division will have nothing to do with BMW-Toyota's upcoming sports car, and that's okay.

My recent chat with the leader of BMW's M2 project revealed that while the cooperation between Toyota and BMW will indeed result in new vehicles and shared hybrid-electric technology, BMW's upcoming sports car, which will likely debut as a roadster, won't get the M treatment.

Meanwhile, what follows that from Toyota's side can easily be a size bigger thanks to the scalable architecture, and since they already secured the Supra name in Europe, the FT-1 concept remains our best guess at what to expect. If we can trust endless rumors surrounding this project, a coupe like that concept, with a BMW inline-six and some hybrid boost, is what Toyota has in mind for us in 2018.

When it comes to BMW, the situation is simple. Nobody is buying the current Z4, but while the premium compact roadster segment is tiny, BMW is not going to abandon it—if there's space for all of their GT cars in this world, there should be room for something as traditional as a lightweight BMW drop-top.

Interestingly, while the second-generation Z4 is only 5.8 inches longer than the first one, it definitely feels like a bigger and more complicated car, with its folding hardtop and the added weight that comes with such luxuries. Considering the hype surrounding the Mazda Miata (and its slightly more comfortable Italian sibling, the Fiat 124 Spider), BMW might want to take a good look at the smaller Z4, the E85 from 2002.

BMW
If a hardcore M version is out of the question from the start, a lighter and cheaper successor might just be the ticket.

Either way it goes, according to the local papers, Austria's Magna-Steyr (most famous for producing the Mercedes G Wagen since 1979) is already gearing up to produce both the German and the Japanese version of this ghost we've been chasing since 2012. They should be worth the wait.

Why not? They slap the M badge on everything these days.

Well Toyota has more at stake here given this is going to be their halo sports car so the risk of them nerfing this thing is probably low.

I wonder if there's an agreement between Toyota and BMW where only Toyota can make a real high output version. Can't think of why else BMW wouldn't want to make an M version.

Not surprised, I don't BMW ever made a "M" for the Z3 and Z4.
