This makes 0 sense. The universal power harness, which I use, comes off the ECU and is shown in the video in the link. You can directly tap this without the harness and do the exact same thing. Obviously the harness makes it plug and play and also easily reversible without anything exposed...

If you need a locksmith, I have heard they have the ability to program a new key, I would have them make a 2nd one when fixing the first one. Way cheaper than dealership, and quicker also.

If it works with the key fob close to the steering wheel then you either have a DoA battery, a wrong battery or an upside down battery, take your pick. The fact it registers when close to the steering column and locks/unlocks proves this.
