I'm no expert, but as far as I know you need the MyBMW app to connect to iDrive. Although you don't need to register an account with the app - well, I didn't anyway!?.

My dealer had originally planned to fit a square full sized plate like the one you have but at the last minute decided to get a slightly smaller plate made. I'm glad that they went the extra mile as it just takes up a bit less real estate on the front bumper!
