So even people with super early 21s don’t have the other bolts. Seems like this is more of a 2 port vs 6 port thing. Not a you have a plastic oilpump thing.
2020 MY z4 m40i. US spec for us only came with 6 port. 10.9 bolts, still had plastic oilpump.
Pump never “failed” but it wouldn’t maintain oil pressure target once it hit certain temps on track. Used 30, 40 and 50 weight oils.
I'm also using the devils own 5w40 oil weight on my 2020, and have been flex fuel tuned for over 20k miles with no issues yet. Hopefully my pump was built on a lucky day.
I DIYed the oilpump job few weeks ago.
Sharing the part numbers, since Toyota said they were backordered for months.
BMW had them readily available.
Appreciated the vid! I followed through it, with no issues.

...LE (earliest of the early Supras) and also have had no issue over 70+ track days, using 5w40 forbidden fruit oil, and upped oil pressure to mid 9Xpsi at WOT (OEM is 79psi). Doesn't mean it's not going to happen.
I have an upgraded oilpump ready to go but have been lazy as it's not a small job.
There isn't any specific circumstances that cause the failures with the plastic-insides oilpumps of the earlier B58's. If you can read your oil level just fine (i.e. the i-drive oil level check completes instead of stopping half way) you're safe for now. There is literally nothing you can do to...
I did not check, but I assume that bolt wouldn't change correct? I do want to say though I have seen somewhere in Reddit that the bolt is also not generally a 100% sure way to tell.
Mine is a 7/20 build date, not super early but I will be changing my oil soon so I can check.
that’s exactly what I mean. Someone with a super early 21 6 port that has the oilpump problem needs to post up and verify if they have the bolts or not. Mine is a 01-21 build, I have the new bolts and no issues. Do any 6 ports really have the old bolts?
From what I’ve seen, every failing oilpump I’ve seen on our discord and Reddit always have the 8.8 bolt. Seems like enough of a tell sign. Although I don’t recall seeing anyone with a 2021/6 port with that issue. Maybe some early 21s but I don’t recall.
Edit: everyone that gets it replaced...
Eastwood is old. Give him a break. He meant oilpump for sure.
also, I’m still not sure about the whole bolt thing. I personally feel that it’s more of a 2 port vs 6 port thing. I need to see evidence of an early 6 port with those bolts, which I haven’t seen yet.
whamp whamp. I would expect nothing less, it is an LE I bought in 2019 so very early into production. But did you mean oilpump? its not the fuel pump I am concerned with.
So from what I've seen, there's a quick way to check what oilpump you have. This is based off owners in SoCal that have had failed pumps replaced with newer revised ones at the dealership. The pump seems to fail regardless of what oil weight your'e using, even olive oil.
Remove the oil fill...
Ok, thanks I will keep an eye on it. While I understand they did the switch over sometime early on, I have an LE so it is most likely a plastic version in there.
There is no specific model year that permanently or conclusively switched away from the plastic pump, and there's no evidence that oil weight has anything to do with the failure mode. There's also no evidence that oil weight doesn't cause the failure mode. The video's assertion is just...
I was watching the referenced youtube video from FCP Euro on the B58s. At ~16 min mark they talk about the issue with the plastic oilpump failure. The claim is that if you use the recommended oil 0w-20 you will not have a problem but if you use a thicker oil it will cause the plastic inside the...
Just looking at this thread again. Papadakis B58 drift engines use O rings blocks with copper head gaskets. Mind you they spin to 8900rpm and 1200 HP with a nitro shot.
