I was watching the referenced youtube video from FCP Euro on the B58s. At ~16 min mark they talk about the issue with the plastic oil pump failure. The claim is that if you use the recommended oil 0w-20 you will not have a problem but if you use a thicker oil it will cause the plastic inside the pump to break. Does this jive or is it BS? For those that experienced a failed pump, were you running the oem viscosity or something thicker?

There is no specific model year that permanently or conclusively switched away from the plastic pump, and there's no evidence that oil weight has anything to do with the failure mode. There's also no evidence that oil weight doesn't cause the failure mode. The video's assertion is just unsubstantiated opinion.

Ok, thanks I will keep an eye on it. While I understand they did the switch over sometime early on, I have an LE so it is most likely a plastic version in there.

Ha! I half jokingly said this exact thing some time ago in one of the other 10,000 oil threads.

So from what I've seen, there's a quick way to check what oil pump you have. This is based off owners in SoCal that have had failed pumps replaced with newer revised ones at the dealership. The pump seems to fail regardless of what oil weight your'e using, even olive oil.

Remove the oil fill cap, look directly inside the oil filler. If the silver bolt has 8.8 stamped on it, then you have the fuel pump that is known to fail and require replacement.

If it says 10.9, you have the updated, revised oil pump that have not been causing issues for 2020 and 2021 models.

whamp whamp. I would expect nothing less, it is an LE I bought in 2019 so very early into production. But did you mean oil pump? its not the fuel pump I am concerned with.

Eastwood is old. Give him a break. He meant oil pump for sure.

also, I’m still not sure about the whole bolt thing. I personally feel that it’s more of a 2 port vs 6 port thing. I need to see evidence of an early 6 port with those bolts, which I haven’t seen yet.

From what I’ve seen, every failing oil pump I’ve seen on our discord and Reddit always have the 8.8 bolt. Seems like enough of a tell sign. Although I don’t recall seeing anyone with a 2021/6 port with that issue. Maybe some early 21s but I don’t recall.

Edit: everyone that gets it replaced with the revised pump has the 10.9 bolt.

'21 6 port Supra here, mine failed and was showing oil pressure up to 112psi as it was running in emergency mode. I have some old posts talking about the issue.

You ever remember checking the bolt in under the oil cap before getting replaced?

that’s exactly what I mean. Someone with a super early 21 6 port that has the oil pump problem needs to post up and verify if they have the bolts or not. Mine is a 01-21 build, I have the new bolts and no issues. Do any 6 ports really have the old bolts?

I did not check, but I assume that bolt wouldn't change correct? I do want to say though I have seen somewhere in Reddit that the bolt is also not generally a 100% sure way to tell.

Mine is a 7/20 build date, not super early but I will be changing my oil soon so I can check.

please do check. I’m very curious to see. It will help explain things if you do indeed have the old bolts.

There isn't any specific circumstances that cause the failures with the plastic-insides oil pumps of the earlier B58's. If you can read your oil level just fine (i.e. the i-drive oil level check completes instead of stopping half way) you're safe for now. There is literally nothing you can do to prevent it from happening except replace your pump early if you know yours is one of the plastic ones.

2021 3.0 manufacture date 10/2020, was never able to read oil level when I got the car used at 20k miles, got the oil pump and oil pressure regulation engine codes and CEL at about 28K miles. Replaced by 3rd party shop, no issues since.
