If I remember correctly the car will not leave diagnostic mode until you press the start button again after being in diagnostic mode.

Try putting your car in diagnostic mode -while car is off do three quick presses of the start button with no foot on brake pedal. I believe with this car you have to have your car in the Diagnostic mode to check the CEL and reset it - I might be incorrect though.

This is great actually! You get a new tunable physical ECU, and get your original ECU back as well. OEM ECUs from Toyota are about ~1500-~2000 a pop.

Its a third car for me, and I have a motorcycle too :) Im in chicagoland so the car then sits all winter until salt/snow is off road.
