Oh I don't expect they are, lol. Not after the hydrogen GR Yaris and hydrogen GR Corolla prototypes have been demonstrated and not after that big conference they held with Kawasaki, Subaru, Yamaha and other firms on the subject of alternative fuels for, at minimum, racing cars : )
Plus they've...
Oh I agree that it wouldn't throw off the chassis balance much if at all with the right fine tuning. And I'd love to see that little engine turned inline RWD as well.
I just can't imagine these two companies actually offering a totally different engine and spending the money to R&D a new front...
If Bestcar's render is anywhere near close to the real thing then I think Toyota will have a winner on their hands.
If accurate, it's interesting how much higher the top of the side doors and cockpit area below the window glass has become compared to 2-seater mid engine designs of the past.
^^ Very intriguing! It's interesting that Bestcar's render fo the LFA II looks a bit like an S2000. I wonder if some of A70's work made its way into that project.
It is 100% the GR Celica and not the GR Supra. Most of the same information has been reported already (likely solid state battery, dual motor 4WD/AWD, two-seater traditional coupe body, 500hp target, etc.).
This includes a tie-up with Mazda who will be selling their own lighter version with...
This is very cool! Nobuteru Taniguchi, Masahiro Sasaki, and Keiichi Tsuchiya all drive Toyota's experimental hydrogen internal combustion GR Corolla racecar.
English subtitles are provided in the video.

That is all highly likely since it's a bespoke race car with plenty of budget for such custom modifications.
I do not expect that Toyota and Subaru would change out the production FA24 engine for a G16E-GTS derivative for all the reasons you stated above. That said it's VERY cool that they did...
^^ To each their own. It certainly is loud in the high pitched sound range. But I'd argue that it's still better to have that kind of sound than almost NO sound (as with some luxury or economy EVs)... or stupid artificially generated sound that doesn't have anything to do with the movement of...
I'm in NO way qualified for a job like that. Not a chance. I'm just another enthusiast like you who reads the trades to see what the auto industry seems be doing and what all the options and trends are going forward. The electric shift is happening slowly and surely but it's definitely not...
Wow! I read the article and no kidding-- that G16E-GTS derivative actually fit within the GR86's subframe and cleared the hood after being turned 90 degrees to make it longitudinal. No telling what transmission they used, if the subframe is totally bespoke and if they needed to use a dry sump...
This is where Porsche's battery R&D and QuantumScape's R&D (soon to be battery supplier to Volkswagen and Porsche) in solid state battery cells should come in. What they are doing with these prototypes you cannot do well with a compact-ish conventional lithium-ion battery pack. At least not...
I LOVE the GR86 and was thinking about considering one after all the improvements over the last generation... but this has given me pause until they address this issue with a recall AND by adding a pre-made gasket the affected area.
2JZ engines and many other classic Toyota engines make use of...
^^ This.
Someday I hope Toyota (and Lexus) actually accept customer orders for the exact model and configuration options they want BEFORE the vehicles are manufactured on the assembly line. I have heard of "special order" cases mostly on the Lexus side but I'm not inclined to believe it was...
The chassis isn't set up for it at all though. It's still taller than the hood line will allow. The front crossmember and suspension were not set up for it at all. It's also a transverse engine. There is no longitudinal version of the G16E-GTS 1.6L 3-cylinder turbo.
What should happen however...

Volkswagen wants to keep it around as long as possible but they are unsure whether or not they can give it one more generation or not due to increasingly difficult emissions and fuel economy regulations.
My...
Mid engine cars do have a unique feel and handling balance compared to FF, FR and RR cars.
It will be interesting if Toyota does make use of their existing G16E-GTS since it's transverse and would make for a perfect way to recreate the same budget formula they used for the last three...
I'll speculate on this a bit myself. Certainly none of us other than Toyota insiders know the true facts about whatever a future MR2 will be:
I think a new GR MR2 is inevitable but other than pure EV speculation it’s also very possible if it is produced in the next 2-4 years that it will use...
Agreed. And for all the pre-hybrid and pre-EV sportscar designs that's just where I personally stand. Personally I'm not class racing what I drive... I'm just enjoying driving it and I enjoy manual transmissions a lot and wish to add a new manual car alongside it soon while they are still on...
