2 washers on each side on the top bolts did the trick!

Should I use washers?!

These shouldn’t scratch the paint, the edges are curved inward and create a flat surface for the double sided tape to lay on

I would mention it to your friend, It honestly doesn't matter since it is the inside of the wheel. Its the principle that matters, they need to do better....
