I follow the ZF guidance and a dose of COMMON Sense lol. 10 years yes thats a bit much. But if a car sits a few month etc thats not the end of the world 4 or 5 years is reasonable schedule. I was driving everyday the M235i, so useage was driving the decision.
I changed mine based on useage. My dealer and his ZF contacts had no issues with that. I think the only real issues is the cost of the ZF fluid lol. Useage should be no issue unless you let the car sit for a long time. I saw nothing in my ZF data referenced to time.
The technical data for the ZF8 is 90000km's service - oil/fluid change. So about 60000 miles. I did mine on my M235i at 100000km's. The fluid was in good shape overall. NO refuse or issues with material in the gearbox pan.

Good advice. One point. Put a touch less in given the variance with measurement. If it needs 1 litre or qt put half and re-measure and add if needed.
