Update, I have found a genuine BMW filter that appears to multi-directional (airflow arrows point both ways). I have ordered it along with some Liqui-Moly A/C System Cleaner. Will update the thread with my results once they arrive.

I fitted lowering springs myself, so do you know what exactly wasn't tightened down?

That's a fair point, I hadn't thought about that. Will test with another phone tonight.
