And this right here is exhibit A as to why an “out the door” price is not how you should look at buying a car. Every state has different taxes and fees. And sometimes there are even differences between counties. The price of the car is the price of the car. Doesn’t matter if it’s an out the door, under the bridge, or in the garage price. The price you pay for the car is still the price. In this case the price of the car is $56,299 and he’s paying the dealer a $495 doc fee to do all the paperwork for the DMV. NH may not have a state sales or usage tax but I can’t imagine there are no title, license, registration or lien fees to register the car. The dealers doc fee is to cover handling those things for you but in actuality most of it is additional profit. But I digress. Back on topic. The price of this car is $56,299. That would be the same price no matter where the purchaser is located but the total transaction cost will vary wildly depending on the state sales/usage tax and DMV fee structure where you live. The total traction in a State with a very high usage tax rate, say 8%, will look much different than the OPs transaction where he pays no tax. The price of the car is still exactly the same. Same goes for any of the stupid-ass and worthless add ons dealers try to sell. If you are foolish enough to agree to it you have to consider those separately as well. You don’t pay $59,299 for the car in that situation. You pay the same $56,299 for the car and you pay $3,000 for the worthless VIN etching or whatever add on you agreed to buy. These out the door prices are purely to confuse buyers as to the true price of the vehicle…
Pretty much sums it up. Car will come with temp plates and I'll be required to register the vehicle at the town hall, which if memory serves me correctly is 1.5%. The whole no sales tax in NH is great and all but each year registering the car is depressing. Likely 900ish this year, next year will be 800, year after probably around 7.

Uncle Sam always get their money one way or another, either up front or slowly over the years.

Pretty much sums it up. Car will come with temp plates and I'll be required to register the vehicle at the town hall, which if memory serves me correctly is 1.5%. The whole no sales tax in NH is great and all but each year registering the car is depressing. Likely 900ish this year, next year will be 800, year after probably around 7.

Your registration is a State or local tax. Not a US Fed tax/fee. States with low or no income tax make up for it in other fee's and local/state taxes. The zero sum applies in many cases.

Federal tax is just that, everyone pays the same. The hope is, less federal tax involved in local matters, the better. Sates are quite different however regarding their total tax burden:

We may not need funds for snow plowing in Florida. Whereas funds will go toward Everglades runoff & waste water. Additionally States can choose to balance their budget or not. It’s quite complex and varies a lot.

Was able to negotiate a similar deal as this one. Thanks OP. It seems like supras are really piling up in my area too. I guess it was meant to be.
