I did some calculations to compare Supra gearing to that of the typical musclecar I grew up with. Overall gearing in 1st gear for the Supra is 16.56:1. The typical musclecar 4-speed stick from 1970 had a first gear ratio of around 2.56. "Close ratio" boxes had 2.20 1st. Rear end ratios ranged from 3.08 to 4.11. Hardcore drag racers would go up to 4.56. To equal the overall gearing of the Supra in 1st gear would have required a 6.47 axle ratio. No wonder the Supra jumps off the line so insanely.

4 speeds vs 8 speeds. I usually start off in 2nd gear in the Supra in manual mode. When you're stopped you can manually put it in 2nd and then whenever you stop for a light it'll always go back to 2nd until you shut the car off.
