Every time ive tried, it throws itself back into park and displays the “safety warning” on the dash

There are parking and safety sensors you can turn off or customize in the infotainment system or on the center console. The last button (near the cup holders) you can mash for over 4 seconds & turn the safety nannies off. If the parking sensors are activated, you can turn them off too. Upper console button with the P next to the light. If it’s lit up, it’s on. Hit it once and it’ll turn off.
