Just got and installed a Berktuning pre-LCI wheel. Firstly, shout out to Phillip, incredible wheel, amazing quality, and definitely how the car should have come. Install was mostly painless (although taking out the stock airbag was a hellish experience).

However, I am dealing with an issue where none of the steering wheel controls work (media included). Took off the airbag and checked to see that all connections were intact, which they were.

In terms of diagnostic features:
- The horn worked
- There was no airbag light
- I get a cruise control error/reduced driver assistance error

Thinking back during the install, I gently moved the ?clock spring (plastic thing behind the wheel) 15-20 degrees, could that be enough to damage the spring? Does anyone have any thoughts about how I should proceed in diagnosing and fixing the issue?

Definitely sounds like a contact issue.
Take a deep breath and remove the steering wheel and do all the connections again.
Check for broken pins.

BMW electronics are the quirkiest in the whole automotive kingdom. Just repeat until it works.

Before the third airbag removal and horn issue did you just take the car for a drive? So many of these things seem to disappear after a bit of driving. Just a thought.

Did go on a little drive, but the cruise control warning seemed to remain. I buttoned everything yesterday (after a ground bolt sheared and I had to jump a ground from another bolt) and the horn problem is gone (I think a wire was compressing the plate) but now there are a few more error codes. However, at this point I am kinda done dealing with this wheel situation, so I am likely going to leave it be until I can swap out the clockspring.

Has anyone tried swapping the clockspring? it looks deceptively straight forward, but seeing as this is a BMW I really ought to know better by now lol

This is very relevant to me and an imminent project. Best of luck sorting this out.

Subscribing as I would like a G8X wheel to replace my JQ some day.

Does anyone know if the single stage air bag still deploys in an accident since OEM is a 2 stage?

Who’s gonna test it? Don’t be shy!

That’s what I’m waiting for.
I have an Air Bag from a G20 that’s dual stage. A guy on reddit used it and said it fits and didn’t cause any air bag lights.

But I also know the OEM air bag has an extra white plug that I have no idea what it’s for compared to the G8X and G20 that don’t have that plug.

I kinda gave up chasing down the issues for now; I think it's a wheel hardware issue after doing a deep dive into the codes, plus the reverse camera retains the predictive turn function, which leads me to believe it isn't the clockspring.

Eventually, I'll try swapping back the OEM wheel and then the hardware buttons but for now (as a resident with no time) the wheel will stay as is because honestly the feel of the wheel is so much more important than the 2 functions I might use every now and again. Plus the volume button is 8 inches away, so not that big of a deal.

My tips for anyone attempting this; use a fat hex/allen key after you puncture the sides of the wheel. The reasoning is the flat part of the end of the allen key gives you more surface area to push in that stupid ass spring to disconnect the airbag. Get comfortable, turn on a fan, play some music, because frustration will quickly turn into rage. Also, that T60 wheel bolt is on very very tight, you will need a breaker bar. I think the torque is 45-55 nM? Lastly, don't shear the ground bolt (I thought the button issue might have been a ground issue and tried to tighten the bolt), but if you do, you can jump ground from the bolt around 8 o' clock, which I confirmed is grounded.

Reach out to Phillip and he can help you troubleshoot. Lots of different varieties of the stock wheel and the upgraded wheel so its easy for a mistake to be made.
Yeah, he was helpful, but I think he also found this issue unexpected. From what he said, it should be plug and play (just my luck to get the one that isn't quite that simple). If everything goes well, it really should be that simple once you get past the airbag and the T60.
