I have a first world problem that I’m hoping to get some advice on. I have a manual supra, and an automatic cayman, and I would like to rotate between these 2 during the spring/summer (both stored during the winter).

Because both cars won’t be in my garage at all times, I won’t have the ability to alternate between the two every other day. One car is with me, while the other would be in a friend’s garage.

So I’m thinking about driving each car about one month at a time. My question is: for the car that is not being used for that 1 month during the spring/summer, is there anything to do other than maybe using Stabil, and a battery trickle charger? During the winter months, I have an extensive list of things that I do for my cars for storage, but I don’t have much experience with shorter term spring/summer storage…
Thanks

I think you’re just asking if the car needs anything when sitting for a month? Battery tender, no stabilizer, and some rodent protection depending on what your friends garage is like. I also put damp rid in my cars in storage because I’m paranoid about musty smells.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the two cars. I've owned a 981 Boxster and considered the Cayman before buying the Supra, but partly because BTDT and the values on the 981 cars are still astronomical, I went with the Toyota.

Anywho... If the batteries are young and strong, I wouldn't even bother with the trickle charger, TBH. Nor the Stabil, assuming that you drive them enough that you'll go through a tank or two of gas in that month. If not, find some ethanol-free gas to use instead of that nasty stuff that they sell us now.

As Dan mentioned, rodents are probably the biggest concern.

Thanks- I only got to drive to the cayman a handful of miles as I went from the dealership straight to my detail shop, then straight to storage….but boy, the drive is truly is a step above the supra. That NA engine is incredible. The drive felt more refined (fwiw, it’s a gts). I still love my supra and will always drive and keep it, but porsche makes a fine machine.

I regularly go a month or so between drives and don't do anything special. I've tried throwing a battery tender on it, but it always reads full, even after 3 weeks, so I don't bother. I think it helps that my garage says pretty warm in the winter (50F+).

I imagine this will get tedious and you'll eventually settle on driving one (Cayman) while the other (Supra) rots away in the remote garage, undriven for years, until you eventually decide to sell it. This happened to me when I was storing a car at my folks place.

I’m afraid you may be right, which is why I’m already starting to regret not getting a stick cayman (I figured that I would get my stick fix with the supra, but as you said, maintaining multiple sports cars is likely to prove to be tedious…)

I'm always trying to be positive, avoid the negativity of the Internet and tendency to pontificate on everyone's mistakes, but... really, one of the best things about a Porsche, especially their mid-engine sports cars, is the shifter in the manual. The 7-speed in the 911 is rubbish, but the 6-speed in the boxster/cayman is nirvana. The clutch feel is perfect, no stupid CDV as in the BMYota, and of course the six cylinder boxster engine is the unique trademark of the Porsche, second only to the inline-6 of BMW.

Now, if you don't have a left leg, or don't know how/want to shift it yourself, the PDK is a true manufacturing and driving marvel. It works very well in my wife's Macan S. It's hard to fault anyone for picking that. But aside from the obvious that having two similar sized sports cars may be a bit redundant, I fear that one may not stick around.

The upside is that the resale on the Porsche, especially a GTS, is quite excellent. If you had bought a proper GT4, you could easily expect to make a profit. Maybe next time. ;)

You speak the absolute truth! The only reason I chose an automatic was so that my wife, who has no interest in stick, can enjoy it. Doesn’t mean that I still don’t have regrets….

Do what I do, I drive the GR86 daily and the Supra for weekend/outings/dinner with the wife. This also leads to adding a 2nd garaged spit closet to home. 1 garage space is crazy to me. Buy a bigger house.

Sounds like a real hassle.. just sell one of the cars and drive your fun car on the weekends, your Kia on weekdays. Or just get a bigger house with a real garage.

supra for daily driving. enjoy the turbo for pep around town and passing power on the highway.
cayman for weekend/track. the balance will shine and the lack of torque will go unnoticed.
