Fully Forged vs. Flow Forged - Why It Matters for Your Wheels

When it comes to high-performance wheels, not all “forged” processes are the same.
Two of the most common terms you’ll hear are fully forged and flow forged.
They might sound similar, but the difference is huge - in how they’re made, how they perform, and how long they last.

What Are Fully Forged Wheels?
Fully forged wheels start with a solid block of aerospace-grade 6061-T6 aluminum:
  • 10,000 tons forging pressure - Compresses and aligns the metal’s grain structure for maximum strength.
  • T6 heat treatment - Improves durability and fatigue resistance.
  • CNC machining - Removes every gram of excess material without losing strength.
Result: dense, uniform metal structure, maximum strength, and the lightest possible weight.

What Are Flow Forged Wheels?
Flow forging (rotary forging) starts like a cast wheel - molten aluminum poured into a mold.
Then the barrel is heated and rolled to strengthen it, but:
  • The center remains cast - with porosity and weaker grain structure.
  • Lighter than full cast, but heavier and weaker than fully forged.

Why Fully Forged Is Stronger & Lighter
  • No weak spots - the whole wheel is forged, not just the barrel.
  • Optimized design - CNC removes all unnecessary weight.
  • Thinner, stronger spokes - lighter without losing rigidity.
  • Better impact resistance - survives hard cornering, braking, or potholes.

Example: An Atomic Wheels 20×9.5 fully forged wheel weighs only 21.8 lbs (9.9 kg) — about 3.1 kg lighter than a typical cast or flow forged equivalent, while being up to three times stronger.

The Price Factor
Traditionally, fully forged wheels are far more expensive than flow forged due to the complex manufacturing process.
At Atomic Wheels, we’ve changed that - by streamlining production, we offer true fully forged wheels at nearly the price of many flow forged options.

Would you look at that... another GPT vendor. hooray
Man, it takes real skill to write that good. Whats your secret?

Also, these wheel designs are all from Alibaba.
What part of the USA are these wheels made in?
Some place in Maine.

Hi guys!

You are partly right - yes, I used GPT, yes, indeed, our production is in China!

But I would argue about "another vender".

Firstly, unlike many companies, we have never hidden the fact that production is in China, our website says this in the FAQ section,
2025-08-12_16-59-33.jpg

but our company and our warehouse, which currently stores 3,000 wheels, are located in Texas.

Secondly, yes, there are similar wheel designs on Alibaba, there are a lot of factories that make wheels, but will you get the same level of quality and service? For two years, we have gone through a difficult path before finding a production that was suitable in terms of quality.
Which you can see for yourself by seeing our rating - 4.95 on

Yes, we are not perfect, we have had difficulties with the delivery of orders, and we always offer various solutions to ensure that the client is satisfied - rivianforums

Thirdly, since we are a young company and are only developing, we make a minimal markup and you will not have to overpay for a promoted brand. Compare our prices and you will see this, we sell fully forged wheels at a price close to flow forged wheels.

We will also be grateful even for simply helping us become better, tell us what designs and sizes of wheels you would like to see? And we will try to replenish our warehouse for the fastest possible delivery to our customers.

I hope I was able to change your opinion about "another seller"

P.S. 0% GPT ;)

These appear to be the same blanks that everyone uses from china, the same blanks we can purchase ourselves directly from the manufacturing factories in china, with zero markup.

So tell us, why should we utilize your company, the middleman, for this purchase at an increased price?

In today’s world you can do almost everything yourself, and that is true for almost any product.
However, shops still exist and grow because quality assurance is important.

If you order wheels from the first factory you find, there is a high chance you will not get what you expected. This is a common situation in the Asian market.
You would need to research, find several factories, and maybe even visit them to make sure they are real manufacturers, not resellers. You would also need to check that they have modern equipment, skilled workers, strong materials, good paint quality, and more.
When you finally choose the best factory, you might find that the price for one set of wheels with delivery is not much lower than in a US store, and sometimes even higher. This happens because you chose the most expensive factory and ordered only one set. Even then, there is no guarantee that the wheels will arrive in perfect condition.

We are not just resellers. We are a company that has worked hard to offer you the best quality at a fair price.
Our designs are our own, even if they look similar to others. It is very difficult to create a completely new style for a product that has been made in its modern form for over a century.
We focus on the perfect balance of low weight, high strength, and a design that many people will like. We test our wheels regularly, develop new models, and share our work on our YouTube channel. Even our packaging uses thicker cardboard than usual to make sure customers receive their wheels without damage.
We also keep our prices low because we ship in full containers, which gives us better factory prices and cheaper logistics.

I hope this answers your question.

Because if those "100% equal" Chinese no-brand wheels you bought to save a few hundred bucks ends up cracking and snapping on the interstate and slamming you into a concrete wall, good luck fighting your insurance companies to pay for the totaled car and hospital bills because China sure isn't no matter what lawyers you know.

I'm not trying to "shill" for this company or any wheel company, but wheels are the 1 thing you could not pay me to go direct to China for to save a buck no matter how many people swear by them. :dunno:

Majority of wheels on the market come from the same factory. But shh, don't tell people that. Let them continue to huff the markup sharpies.
