Auto Shut Down if Not Locked?

Hello,

I was just curious if anyone knows if or when the Supra will automatically turn off when you do not lock the car. For example, when I park the Supra in the garage, I often don’t lock it. However, I have noticed before that the car doesn’t seem to turn off for quite a while.

Does anyone know if it will eventually turn off and if so, how long it will take? Thanks.

I wouldn’t trust the auto shutoff even though it’s supposed to happen. Who knows what code gremlins might keep the car awake.

Thanks. The weird thing is it is in “off” on the display, but it doesn’t seem like the car actually turns off all the displays and whatnot.

Off means it’s in Standby state. When Off disappears it’s in Idle state (true off).

You may want to know that by pressing and holding the on/off button, for the radio, will put the car in idle state (off) without having to lock the doors. Try it.

When I picked up my car the dealer had a list of 5 or so things to tell me.

1). How to properly close the hood
2). No launch mode for 1200miles
3). Recommended always locking the doors to put the car to sleep, in order to avoid a dead battery

Define “turned off”.

Just read and digest the screen grab I posted from the owners manual. If you set the menu option to do so, the car can go into Idle state (as “off” as it gets) when you open the door to get out of the car after you’ve entered Standby state.

In theory no. In practice? Unknown.

Common sense would tell me that, with any current model car which relies heavily on computerize/electronic technology, there will of course be an electronic draw for such things as clock memory, alarm system, etc. Even my sxs Polaris Razor is on a battery tender, for longer term storage as is my boat & trailer. Though the boat and trailer have isolation switches, it is a good idea to use a cheap battery tender for the longevity and health of your batteries, which can take a hit with our fluctuating temperatures. $15 to $20 is cheap insurance.

Yeah, if I didn't live in a place where snow was a one-day-per-decade occurrence and drive my MKV every day... I'd definitely get one for peace of mind. It's so little money in comparison to the hassle of not being able to drive when you want to - let alone having to replace the battery often!

Anyway, after I toggled my setting in I drive to turn off car after door opening it’s all good. Now my dash cam shuts off as soon as I get out and shut the door. Although I gotta admit I still check the dash cam is off every time....why do the Germans do this stuff?

Yes...things like poor warranty service, poor reliability, high depreciation, sky high consumable parts, and having to pay the dealer to clear maintenance minders for oil changes kept me from buying German for 40 years, until I recently owned a '18 911. First car I ever owned that could drain a battery in a week, sitting in the garage. Having to constantly fool with a tender is not ideal...What if you're traveling and happen to leave the car parked for a week or more, at a hotel of airport? I think the Germans have underestimated the impact these things have on sales/reputation. I hear people talking about how they appreciate the "dealer experience", but I'm more concerned about them leaving buyers out in the cold with known issues that a company like Toyota/Lexus will cover. Warranty histories speak for themselves, and I've come to trust Toyota/Lexus over nearly 40 years of ownership. That's one reason I'm buying a Supra from Toyota, and not a BMW.
