Side Impact Safety

I finally test drove a Supra. I was impressed upon by the closeness between my head and to the left side car top. Any thoughts on a side impact crash? I'm not sure a z4 comparison crash test applies at least for the convertible case.

it looks like a glancing accident and doesn't seem to be a basis to argue that the vehicle is safe in a side accident.

avoiding injury is all about distributing the deceleration forces over time. seems to me in a side accident, regardless of the air bags closeness, the brain will go swish.

Both poles had similar penetration. You have to look at the reports that analyzed the data from the dummy.

TBH if your moving any real speed in this kind of impact, you are dead. There is not enough space between you and the pole to dissipate much force.

I was in one of these wrecks when I was much younger and dumber. The pole was directly behind me. A foot forward and you could put in the premium orange juice boxes as I’d be pulp.

Are you sure?

Nope - not sure. just eye balled the video and watched the head get pushed around.

it seems to me, when looking at the car from front, that the roof top could have been made so that it extends further to the side. as designed, just tilting your head results in hitting the roof top.
