Can’t say I didn’t tell you so...

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2017/11/toyota-s-new-sports-car-might-not-be-called-supra.html

Toyota will not call this FT-1 a “Supra”.....it will be called something new or probably a “3000GT”.
One of our new members says other wise.

Saw the real car yesterday in Denmark. Akio Toyota presented it to the European dealers.
It looks ok and pretty much like expected. The only information we got was it has 340horses, has a Toyota Engine and will debut in 2019.
That’s all. But yes it looks not like the FT1 more like the red car scatch on this side. The front bumper is a bit different. No pictures sorry, they took all our cameras!
Oh and there will be a GRMN Version coming too at some point with probably a little more thrust!
Could be, maybe it was another concept! As I said Akio showed us the European dealers a car and said this is the new Supra. If it was another concept or the final product was no said.
Honestly I was a bit disappointed, because you expect something sexy like the FT1, but it was very similar to the red car below. The front fenders were not sexy. The rear was sexy. The front is a bit different then on the red car. It had LED headlights. Oh and it is called SUPRA not Celica.

“The name decision will not be made until next year as well. There are some other candidates for some other reasons that are really pretty strong.”

Jack Hollis is the one that was interviewed and my source just said they havent decided yet, so I'd chalk it up to Akio being Akio

How much in the loop are some of these executives anyways? For example only 7 people within the Ford company knew of the new GT. I believe this is done because when they jump ship they can't disclose the info to their company.

Jack is very much in the know as far as things marketing go, which is what the name falls under. He is much less in the loop as far as overall development as that is engineering. among other things, he is also one of the main people that will be deliberating/deciding on options and such for NA.

many people are fond of the Supra name but worry about the bashing that may ensue if the new car doesnt please the populous; a legitimate concern I think.

Wasn't it Jack Hollis that made the decision for the 86 to be sold as a Scion in the US? That was probably one of the dumbest decisions Toyota made marketing wise.

I am one of those people! If it will be called “Supra” it better deliver like a Supra....in every aspect!

If they call it a “GT-1” or something along those lines, I’ll buy it....because then, it will create a new cult following for years to come in it’s own unique way and I won’t have to worry about the MKIV owners looking down on my car as it will be a different car!

This is why Toyota NEEDS to NOT call this car a Supra! Let’s see a new halo car!

I think that was a lot more about trying to save a brand that had nothing new and exciting, but yes it was dumb IMO. Not sure if he was solely responsible, but Jack was in charge of Scion and did try to do as much as he could for the youthful side of Toyota. Ultimately it just wasn't meant to be though...

I agree. Like good movie series, they should leave the Supra legacy to the history books now.

Imho, from the info, this car will be a better sports car than the supra and create it's own new chapter, so fingers crossed it gets its own name.

I hope they call it the RZ. Nice homage to the Supra, kind of like they did with the 86.

Exactly! Toyota is notorious for creating awesome halo sports cars, and ones that stand the test of time. The 2000GT now fetches over a million dollars at auctions. The AE86 is so sought after, people are restoring rusted examples of them all over the world. The Supra....well, we all know about the Supra. Toyota needs another new “hero” halo car to save the brand’s sportscar image. They need something new to come out with a bang and surprise the world over. Again, I wouldn’t mind if they resurrected the Supra, but I would love it if they gave us a new halo car. The Supra is just a name....the engineering and design is what made the name legendary. If someone asked me today what would you rather have, a cookie cutter car just so it’s called a “Supra” or an engineering marvel called the “GT-1”, I would be all over the “GT-1”.

Btw, you notice I mention the name “GT-1”....I am hoping Toyota will have a line up of “GT” cars (i.e., GT-1, GT-86, etc...).

...im trying to stay positive lol.

Honestly Am betting on this car following in the footstep of the SC to LC name change. Also not naming the car supra would keep the value of the supra where it is and some time in the nearest future if this new car is a hit, I can see the supra following in the foot step of the 2000GT as a collectors car.

I don't think it will have any effect either way. Has the value gone down on the 1st gen NSX since the new one was released? Nope
