Here's the schedule I was able to piece together from my memory and google.
This first prototype was around Oct 2009. (first pic)
Advanced prototype car spotted around May 2011 (second pic)
Production started March 2012.
So 2.5 yrs from first prototype to production. Hope it's not that long...
Hey now... it is! Well sometimes :) On my local drives around town and for commuting the car definitely has enough power. For long drives on the highway and occassional track work of course I'd like more power... just depends on how much that extra power costs and if I still get the great...
Good point. But by the time the Supra begins production it may have been 3-4 years since i3 production started, during which time carbon fiber production costs may have dropped. Or at least I hope :)
They didn't cite a source but I hope they're right and not just making stuff up to sell magazines. Doesn't sound like it's like the BMW i8 or i3 full carbon tub though? Sounds like a mix of CF + metals?
Definitely want their CF technology but nothing else, especially ENGINE! They'd be bastardizing the Supra name if they stick any BMW drivetrain in a Toyota. Or please name it something other than Supra.
Yea I know my car has a Subaru engine, but the FR-S is a new model and Toyota has some...
I just wanna see a slightly reworked front end. Lose the big fans and other parts that we know are not making it to production. Size it down too (10% smaller is what we've been hearing?).
Never thought about it that way. Interesting perspective and makes sense actually. My worry though is market perception about a $60k+ Toyota. It's not something people are used to for a Toyota.
To answer your question no other Toyota or Lexus uses carbon fiber besides the LFA, but your point begs the question... why can't they just use what they have learned from the LFA?
^^ LOL that one doesn't even have tires. Hope to never seen one like that, ever. Seeing cars like that at SEMA give the car a bad name.
This one though is proper!
Maybe that's the ultimate reason for it, but early on when there was all this talk of Toyota wanting to do more models and stuff, it was also rumored that Subaru wasn't on board so Toyota couldn't just do it by themself.
Performance wise the gt350 will be a very tough competitor. Magnetic ride suspension, 500hp/400tq and possibly lighter too. Like others have stated they will be world's apart in interior, quality and refinement. It's the same cheap american muscle formula. Not bashing on it, it works for some...

Disappointed in this news if true but...
Paving the way for the Supra to offer BOTH?
Dont forget Toyoda too. He heads the company but he's a real racing and sportscar enthusiast. The man raced in the 24 hr race at Nurburgring in the LFA.
