While that quote may be a little questionable let's leave the personal attacks out of this. Tada San has done more to bring sports cars back to Toyota than most know. He's handcuffed by the decisions made by the board who don't give a rip about sports cars.
Do you have a guess as to how long the production cycle is planned for this Supra? Will it be on an extended cycle like the 86 where it will be almost 8-9 years before a possible second generation or a more standard 4-5 years. That will determine when a possible manual will be available for the...
Seriously doubt it. They're a very stubborn bunch who build exactly what they want but not necessarily what vocal enthusiast want.
Just look at how the 86 situation turned out. From the start there was a huge backlash clamoring for more power that was met with BS excuses: a turbo won't fit...
True it's all about money. TSS can work with a manual but Toyota doesn't see a reason to fork out the R&D funds to make it work with a BMW drive train that's only going to be used on one car. Some people were saying that Just because it was a manual it would be difficult to incorporate TSS. Just...
The whole point of a completely impractical two seat sports car is driver involvement and excitement. FOR ME a manual is just more FUN. I don't care it the Auto/DCT is 0.XX faster or safer. I only care about how it makes me feel behind the wheel. If I'm dropping $50-70 grand on a car I want to...
I agree with everything you just said. I wasn't advocating for or against it just remarking that maybe that is why Toyota showed the technology. Unfortunately I think that will be the industries attempt at trying to placate the manual buyers and still implement their safety tech.
Thank you.
That's exactly what I was referring to. I think this may be the closest thing we're going to see to a "traditional manual" in the near future based on New safety regs. (as long as it's mated to a DCT and not a torque converter)
This is a Halo Sports Car for the brand. It's not going to be a money maker for the company anyway and they already know that. There's no reason to alienate 50-75% of the potential customers (based on manual take rates for the GT86 twins).

According to Kelley Blue Book in 2016 it was 75% manual take rate for the BRZ:
"Manual transmission models, which account for an astounding 75 percent take rate, receive a 5-pony boost to 205 horsepower and...
It seems like the more powerful GT86 everyone was begging for. Not saying that's a good or bad thing for the Supra nameplate but they can't please everybody.
Oh I agree I don't think it will be larger but maybe close to the same. And I was thinking with it being a lift back I won't have to try and play tetris to get larger oddly shaped items into the trunk and through the pass through.
