The magazine said the wheelbase would be 97.2 in and thats what showed up on the Toyota press release. Plus their rendering looks so close to the spied prototype, so in my opinion I think they are creditable. We can still have a longer overall length...

I kind of get what you are saying. It does give off a little Z4 coupe feel. However, most lift-backs generally look like this. With the rear windshield part; its the same with the FT1 and past Supras as well.
I think some are overreacting about the length of the car. If the leaks of *172.4 in* are correct then it would be just 5.4 in shorter than its predecessor. Its still going to be longer than the 86 and 370z *166.9 in*. It's actually slightly longer than the 718 Cayman *172 in*.
It probably is, but at least the door doesn't look plain like the Z4. I know some aren't happy with the panel line or gap, but thats nothing a little bondo can't fix.
Does anyone know if the car has been shown to US dealers? I'm curious to see if their are any differences between a "US version" and a "global" version.
