Yes, this is completely BS, but are you talking about VANOS/Cam Timing? The throttle body is absolutely not a fail-safe. I think you need to get your service manual back out.
First, Supra doesn't have a MAF, it has MAP sensors. Second, they don't need cleaning. It's in a relatively close system (after the filter). The throttle body is in there too. Even if it was dirty, you wouldn't need to clean it.
