To answer your original question, I have a few custom plates and my unpopular opinion is that they're actually pretty cool, albeit with two clear exceptions:
A plate that directly reference the car they are on, ie: SUPRA or FORD, MX5, etc.
Or worse, a plate that esoterically references the car...

I've gone even further and removed the daft orange line so all I see is the speed. With my polarized Oakleys the HUD is dull but still visible which is fine too. It is my primary speed readout and coupled with my steering wheel shift lights, I have no need to look down at the instrument cluster...
